INTRODUCTION
Return to the Intro Menu

It has been written by some people that the John DeWitt from who we descend came from Pennsylvania and  Westmoreland County near Pittsburgh. This has been suggested because he met and married his wife Nancy Culbertson in that area of the country around 1790.  However no one seems to have found any links between John DeWitt in that area of Pennsylvania with other DeWitts who could be his parents.

For many of us John DeWitt descendants it has been tempting to try an connect to the famous Tjerck DeWitt family of the Kingston, NY area because so much is known about his family both before and after him.

In my initial investigations I traced our family back to Thomas DeWitt in Virginia (now West Virginia) and could not find out any information as to the identity of his parents. So one spring back in 1981 my wife and I headed down to West Virginia because we saw in a road atlas Buffington's Island in the Ohio River near Ravenswood WV, and we figured there had to be an important story there since we knew that Thomas DeWitt had been married to Mary Buffington.  Once we arrived we found the genealogical section of the Jackson County WV Public Library and we had a field day reading Jackson County history books and the census records.  We even found the DeWitt Cemetery where Thomas and family members were buried. One day I noticed a nicely bound family genealogy entitled
Rowley-King and Allied Families, by Homer King Rowley and Ruth McCammon Rowley which had recently been published in 1980.  I walked by it and pulled it out because it was so handsomly bound and I wondered how one goes about publishing a genealogy.  I was floored when I found a chapter on the DeWitts, the Culbertsons and the Buffingtons! I corresponded with Ruth soon afterward just after Homer's death. She sold me a copy of the genealogy and quite a bit of additional information.  I imagine at the date of this writing in July 2003, that Ruth has passed on as well as she was born in 1908.  I thank them for their efforts.

Is it Johannes?

Anyway... the Rowley-King DeWitt chapter suggested that we John DeWitt descendants are related to the Tjerck DeWitt family although they admitted that they could not specifically connect John with a specific Tjerck DeWitt descendant (pg. 96).  However they suggested it might have been Johannes DeWitt.   So as beginner... I was happy to believe this and we went home happy.  I then went on a rampage to learn all I could about the Kingston, NY DeWitt line.

A few years ago I started posting my family information on the internet for everyone else in the family to enjoy and I have been informed by several other people that the link back to Johannes is still not confirmed and that we John DeWitt descendants should remain disconnected.... ahhh lost in a sea of DeWitts!!

What follows in this document is all the information I have found out about the ancestors of Johannes DeWitt back through Tjerck and then further back to Jan in 1295.... who may not be related to me at all!  If that turns out to be true then I hope someone who IS related to the Kingston, NY DeWitts will find this website useful.

Is it Ezekiel?

NEW INFO:  On March 19th, 2004 Jackilyn Turner wrote to me about her collection of information that suggested that OUR John DeWitt was the son of Ezekiel DeWitt who was the brother of Johannes.  Cheryl Gallagher related to me on 4/12/04 that Cathy Green also believes we are descendants of Ezekiel DeWitt.

While on spring break this year in April 2004,  (yeah.. I am a teacher!) I found some spare time to correspond with a few other genealogists and Dorothy Craft  mentioned that Ezekiel had been "seen" in western PA and in the Turkey-Foot region.  That got me to snooping and I found the following information: The really interesting fact about Ezekiel is that he is on record of moving to western PA and is found on the tax records of Bedford county (later to become Cumberland Co.,) in Brothers Valley Township in 1768. (At the time the township of Brothers Valley was formed it encompassed the entire of present-day Somerset County and the southern part of Cambria County.) It appears that Ezekiel was living in the Turkeyfoot Region illegally!  They were forbidden by the Proprietaries of the Colony of Pennsylvania to reside on the lands not yet purchased from the Indians. The list of inhabitants was made by the commissioners sent to expel them from the region in March-April, 1768. (ref).  Are you confused about the counties of Pennsylvania?  Me too.  In the references section below, I have added a few maps: PA Counties

So all of a sudden, Ezekiel DeWitt seems to have taken the lead in the Who is the Daddy of John DeWitt Contest. I have included that possibility in this website as well.  (You can jump directly to Ezekiel by clicking HERE.) Maybe we are making some progress?

April 2007

In ancestry.com, Ezekiel DeWitt, had a son Johannes born in 1756, not a John.  This Johannes married Catharina Quick in 1776 and they lived in Ulster Co, NY.  So the famous Pennsylvania Ezekiel, may be some other Ezekiel.

The Long Island Connection...

Is it Abraham?

In case you are wondering about other options, we John DeWitt descendants may actually be related to a line of DeWitts who arrived in Long Island, and then migrated west through New Jersey and into Pennsylvania.  We might be descendants of Abraham DeWitt. If you are interested, take a look at:  A Long Island Connection? and specifically his father, Paulus Dewitt.

Is it Peter?

Another DeWitt of the Long Island DeWitt line also named a son John about the same time period as our John was named... so we might be descendants of Peter DeWitt, a younger brother of Abraham and son of Paulus Dewitt. If you are interested, take a look at:  A Long Island Connection? and specifically his father, Paulus Dewitt.

Please refer to the DeWittAncestry, the KingstonNYCLAN (you are there)
and the LongIslandCLAN
websites for discussion about the ancestors of John DeWitt.

2009 INFORMATION (As of January 5th)

The author of this website is the great great great great grandson of John DeWitt.
Recently I joined the DeWitt DNA Project with the hopes of connecting my Y-chromosome
37 marker analysis to another Dewitt from one of the known clans who arrived in the 1600s:

Current analysis of my Y-chromosome 37 marker DNA results, which for now represents all of the male DeWitts descendant from John Dewitt, and therefore all of the mentioned or unmentioned females) suggests that we are NOT related within 500 years of the people who have had their DNA analyzed and are members of the FamilyTree DeWitt DNA Project.
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/dewittfamilydna/default.aspx

Up to this time, three 1600s Dewitt clans have been claimed.
a. Tjerck Dewitt from Kingston NY area
b. Jan Dewitt from Long Island area
c. Jacob Dewitt from Virginia area

My DNA does not match (at the 37 marker analysis level) with any members in the DeWitt DNA group.
There are currently 19 other members. This analysis is on the Y chromosome only.

This means that:
a. There is a fourth Dewitt clan from whom our John Dewitt descends.
b. There was an adoption in Don's line somewhere back in time.
c. There was an illegitimate birth somwhere back in time.
d. There were these "nonpaternal events (b & c)" in the history of the other DeWitt DNA member's lines.

In case b. or c., this issue may affect only my line from Thomas DeWitt (1791-1879),
or many other lines shown on this document.

In cases a and d., we need more DNA to further evaluate.

This challenge is the reason for this document.  We need more male Dewitt DNA!
Please contact me if you can advise or help.

Controversy exists with this link. First there is a Todd Allen Johnson vs. LaSaundra Berens disagreement. Todd beleives that [Kornelis (aka Cornelius Frans) de Wit b: 4-30-1545 d: 3- APR 1622 + Johanna Heymans  b: 1-12-1547   d: 5-24-1602] link Frans de Witt (gen 9) to Claes Nicholas de Wit (gen 11).

LaSaundra believes it was Jan DeWitt as shown below.

Of course John DeWitt (VERSION 3) has Jan de Witt  [m. Klara van Beveran] and then Willem de Wit [b.13 Apr 1516  m. Maria van Wesel] as the parents of Jan de Wit (gen 10). This relationship can be seen at: VERSION 3) or discussed below at Controversy.

Controversy exists with this Jan deWit to Claes Nicholas deWit link.  There is only circumstantial and inferential proof that Jan deWitt is Claes Nicholas de Wit's father. This is discussed extensively by John DeWitt at Tjerck's Father.

Here is some new info from Stephen Aderholdt (loungeleviathan@hotmail.com): (Taken from: Tjerck Claessen De Witt Ancestry Research Page)
I just located the wife of Gerard deWitte, father of Goord Godschalk deWitte who marr. a Van Houweningen.

On www.familysearch.org, by typing in just "Goord Witte",  I located a record of Goord Goschalk DeWitte, IGI record, b.1336 Dordrecht, son of Gerard DeWitte and Catharina Van der Does; also of Goord Goschalck DeWitte marr.c1374 (Dordrecht), unknown.

Gerard D.W. b.c1300 Dord;Gerard marr. c1325 Catharina Van der Does.    Next I located a documented file
on a Van der Does family by typing in Dutch first names and Does as the surname.  Found some in Leiderdorp,S.Holland going back to the 1200s-the name was originally DeCroiselles, of Cambrai, FR, changedto Van der Does c1300.  Catharina is not listed but was probably a member.  Needs more research.

Controversy exists with this link.

According to the Dutch Genealogy (Copied by Robert DeWitt of Cincinnati from a book at a library in the Hague and written in Dutch) Frans had no children named Jan. His children are shown above.

However, ...
Todd Allen Johnson believes that Frans' 4th child above, Kornelis (aka Cornelius Frans) de Wit who married  Johanna Heymans links Frans de Wit (gen 9) to Claes Nicholas de Wit (gen 11)

but... according to the Dutch Genealogy Kornelis's children (see above) may have all been females
* In the case of Andries, Frans and Jacob, there is a Ms. in front of their names so that could indicate that they are the unknown females who married males by these names. So... if they are  all women the DeWit name can not continue through Frans. Todd's link states that Frans had a son Nicholas (Claus) DeWitt, but Todd offers no proof on his website so this may just be Wishful Thinking. (I have not corresponded with Todd about this so he may have proof.)
LaSaundra Berens believes it was Jan DeWitt as shown below who was the father of Nicholas. She offers no proof so this may just be Wishful Thinking. (I have not corresponded with LaSaundra about this so she may have proof.)  Contrary evidence is found in the Dutch Genealogy that shows that the Jan de Wit shown below, who married Jacomina van Barestijne in 1590,  was the son of Willem de Wit who was the son of Jan de Wit who was the son of Witte die Witte (gen 7 above).

So is this the way to Claes Nicholas deWitt?  Well Jan, as you can see below, did have a son called Nikolass born on the 8th of July of 1597.  The problem is that the Dutch Genealogy provides NO children for Nikolaas.

The Dutch Genealogy used above is actually found on John DeWitt's Tjerck Claessen De Witt Ancestry Research Page and he has come to the same conclusion. Using this genealogy, we have a dead end.  However... John feels that this Nikolaas is the likley father of Jan deWit.  John's lineage for this mess is shown at: JanToTjerck.

The problem with this is that #1we all want reliable answers and #2 other information states that Nicholas had brothers of Andries and Jacob which is not shown in Jan's family.  There are plenty of brothers, but no Andries and no Jacob.

So I guess we are left in limboland better known as Wishful Thinking.  John DeWitt does provide some hope and research leads in his website, so maybe someone out there will figure it out.

NEW INFO:

On March 19th, 2004
Jackilyn Turner wrote to me about her collection of information that suggested that OUR John DeWitt was the son of Ezekiel DeWitt who was the brother of Johannes.

Me too.  In the references section below, I have added a few maps: PA Counties.

Another (or the same) Ezekiel DeWitt was living in Ohio county, Virginia in 1776 when the settlers gathered to decide upon the location of their future court:
"In compliance with the provisions of said Act of the General Assembly, and of certain instructions addressed to him, John McColloch, Esq., summoned the landholders within the county to convene, on the 27th day of December, 1776, at the cabin of Ezekiel Dewitt, Esq., situated on  Creek, for the purpose of electing and constituting a committee in said county, and also to make choice of a place where county courts were to be held in future in said county. The convention met at the time and place mentioned, and by a vote of the majority of those present decided in favor of Black's
Cabin, situated on the water of Short Creek. "  (REF)

Where is Ohio County, Virginia...?   Well now it is in West Virginia and is the county where Wheeling is located, so as you can see from the MAP, it is very close to PA, MD and OH, and could easily be the next stop for Ezekiel.  It is "on the way" down to Jackson Co., where John DeWitt eventually wound up with his family.

SEE REFERENCES

A new analysis:  May 2007:

Ezekiel's son John DeWitt married Katharine Quick.
John was born after 1760 when Ezekiel married Maria Keller

In 1776 or 1781??  Virginia State Library List of Rev. Soldiers includes Ezekiel DeWitt, who was paid off at Ft. Pitt with his son.  (ref)

In 1781 Ezekiel had a license for keeping an ordinary (tavern) in Washington Co., PA.

Katharine and John were mentioned in her father's will dated 1792 in southwest PA in Smithfield, which is now in Fayette Co, PA (ref).

Our John DeWitt lived
In the 1790 census for Westmoreland Co, PA in Hempfield Township, John Culbertson and a John Dewit were listed next to each other which I assume means they lived next to each other. (Westmoreland Co, is the county north of Fayette county.)  The date was 14 April 1790.

So we still have a problem.  Our John DeWitt lives next door to his future father-in-law in 1790.
Ezekiel's John Dewitt is mentioned in his wife's (Katharine Quick) were mentioned in a will dated 1787 and probated on 1792 in Smithfield, PA (ref).

So HOW could Ezekiel's John, be our John?

They have different wives in the same area at the same time.

At first I thought that maybe Katharine was our John's first wife who gave birth to our Thomas in 1789
and then  Nancy Elizabeth? (aka Agnes) * Culbertson was John's second wife after 1790.
But the Quick will mentioned above wrecks that hypothesis assumin Katharine and John were present at the reading of Cornelius Quick's will in 1792. (ref)

So... as of May 2007,... I still do not think that Ezekiel DeWitt's son John, is our John DeWitt

More importantly, as of March 2009, I think that our John DeWitt was born in France and we are not descendants of either New York DeWitt clan.

Moved to Carrol Co, OH after 1817.
But Carrol Co, OH was not created until 1832 so he could have been in Stark, Columbiana, Jefferson, Harrison or Tuscarawas Counties before 1832.

A Henry Dewitt and one adult female were living in Preston Co, VA in the 1820 census.

I can not find any Dewitts in the counties named above in 1820.

Martinus was the son of Paulus Dewitt

Paulus was the son of Barnet Dewitt and Sarah Van Tassel.

Note also the huge difference in ages of last two children.

Something seems in error here.

* Quote from Tierck Clafsen DeWitt and Descendants of His Son Luycas DeWitt by Vona (DeWitt) Smith

A new analysis:  August 2008:

- Ezekiel's son John DeWitt married Katharine Quick in 1776 in Ulster Co, NY.
+  John was born after 1760 when Ezekiel married Maria Keller

+  In 1776 or 1781??  Virginia State Library List of Rev. Soldiers includes Ezekiel DeWitt,
who was paid off at Ft. Pitt with his son.  (ref) [This son was probably not John. It could have been Peter.]
- In 1781 Ezekiel had a license for keeping an ordinary (tavern) in Washington Co., PA.

- Katharine and John Dewitt were mentioned in her father's (Cornelius Quick) will dated 1792 in southwest PA in Smithfield, which was then and is now in Fayette Co, PA (ref).
(PA county formation map)
(Fayette Co, PA map)

- Our John DeWitt lived...
In the 1790 census for Westmoreland Co, PA in Hempfield Township, John Culbertson and a John Dewit were listed next to each other which I assume means they lived next to each other. The date was 14 April 1790.
(Westmoreland Co, PA map)

fay and west
For this comparison I have combined the Washington, Allegheny, Fayette and the Westmoreland Co maps to show how close John Dewitt (Ezekiel's) and our John Dewitt reside about the same time.  (You can click on the map to see a larger view.)
A. Yellow outline:
  -   Hempfield
Township, Westmoreland Co, PA
     {Location of our John Dewitt & John Culbertson in 1790}

B. Green outline:
  -   Smithfield, Georges
Township, Fayette Co, PA
     {Cornelius Quick's will was probated and location of Ezekiel's son John & wife Katharine Dewitt in 1792}

C. Gold outline:
  -   Springhill
Township, Fayette Co, PA
     {Location of a John Dewitt in 1800 [who could be Ezekiel's son with wife Katharine?]}

D. OTHER:
  -   A Jonathan Dewit was living alone in Bullskin Township, Fayette Co, PA in 1810.
      {I have no idea who he was.}

  -   Our John Dewitt was listed in Mason Co, VA census in 1810.

      {This was after their migration to Muses Bottom, VA.}

  -   Ezekiel Dewit recieved his pay at Fort Pitt (Pittsburgh) in Allegheny Co
, PA in 1776.
  -   Ezekiel Dewit received a license for a tavern in Washington Co
, PA, in 1781.
  -   Ezekiel Dewitt was living on Buffalo Creek in Ohio County, VA in 27th day of December, 1776
where a meeting was held.  {This is not on the map above... but would be nearby on the left because
      Washington and Greene below it (not shown) abut to Ohio County, VA.}

  -   Note that Ezekiel died about 1787 so he did not show up on any census, and therefore there is no
suggestion of the size of his family at the times he was sighted in other references.

So we still have a problem.

Our John DeWitt lives next door to his future father-in-law in 1790.
Ezekiel's son John Dewitt is mentioned in his wife's (Katharine Quick) father's will dated 1787 and probated on 1792 in Smithfield, now part of Fayette Co, PA.

So HOW could Ezekiel's John, be our John?

They have different wives in the same area at the same time.

At first I thought that maybe Katharine was our John's first wife who gave birth to our Thomas in 1789
and then  Nancy Elizabeth? (aka Agnes) Culbertson was John's second wife after 1790.
But the Quick will mentioned above wrecks that hypothesis assumin Katharine and John were present at the reading of Cornelius Quick's will in 1792.

So... as of August 2008,... I still do not think that Ezekiel DeWitt's son John, is our John DeWitt.
BUT it sure seems like it should all fit together because they are living so close to each other at the same time, and in 1800 the only other John Dewitt to be found in Pennsylvania is on the northeastern side of the state in Wayne County. which is the county that is just about as far away as possible.

Ezekiel Dewitt married Maria Keller on 6 Apr 1760 in Kaatsbaan, Ulster Co., NY.  (ancestry.com)

1768:
Ezekiel DeWitt was living in Turkeyfoot Township in Bedford Co. (later Somerset Co.), Pennsylvania:

"According to authentic records, namely, the testimony of Rev. Capt. John Steel, who visited this locality in April, 1768 the following persons were then resident at or near Turkeyfoot: Henry Abrahams, Ezekiel Dewitt, James Spencer, Benjamin Jennings, John Cooper, Ezekiel Hichman, John Enslow, Henry Enslow and Benjamin Pursley. Some of these doubtless lived within the bounds of Addison Township (which was born in 1800.) " (REF)  This area is very close to subsequent sightings of Ezekiel listed below.
Another reference states, in 1768 he was living in Confluence, PA.  This town is located southwest of Somerset as shown below in Lower Turkeyfoot Township.  (See MAP)

The Turkeyfoot is the junction of  the Castleman's river and the Laurel Hill Creek, also known as  the North fork, with the Youghiogheny river. (REF)  It is where Confluence, PA is located.

Also, an Ezekiel DeWitt was living in Ohio County, Virginia in 1776 when the settlers gathered to decide upon the location of their future court:
"In compliance with the provisions of said Act of the General Assembly, and of certain instructions addressed to him, John McColloch, Esq., summoned the landholders within the county to convene, on the 27th day of December, 1776, at the cabin of Ezekiel Dewitt, Esq., situated on Buffalo Creek, for the purpose of electing and constituting a committee in said county, and also to make choice of a place where county courts were to be held in future in said county. The convention met at the time and place mentioned, and by a vote of the majority of those present decided in favor of Black's Cabin, situated on the water of Short Creek.   The present site of West Liberty was originally improved by Abraham Vanmetre. His daughter Ruth married Reuben Foreman, and another daughter named Hannah married Providence Mounts. Foreman and Mounts laid out the town of West Liberty, which was organized November 20, 1787. It was the first town organized in the Ohio Valley."  (History of Wheeling and Ohio Co, WV, printed in 1902: REF)

Note: Another reference (REF) written in 1887 states that it was Ezekiel Detwiler rather than Dewitt. (Third paragraph from the bottom in the article.)
As you can see below, Ohio County is VERY close to Westmoreland Co., PA where John DeWitt was first detected in 1790.  Note that in 1776, (map) the southwest corner of PA was simply Westmoreland Co.  This map is a 2004 map.

"I'm not sure if I mentioned this before, but Cathy Green also believes we  descend from Ezekiel DeWitt.  When I was in PA, I stopped by the courthouse  in Washington Co.  I only found 2 references to Ezekiel DeWitt - Deed Book  1D, p. 86 deed to Casper Rumenagh recorded 7 Aug 1787 and Deed Book 1C, p. 31-33  deed to Joseph Jones recorded 26 Apr 1786.  They did not mention  any other DeWitts. "

From Cheryl Gallagher (4/18/04):
"While I was in Westmoreland Co, PA a couple of years ago, I made a point to stop by Confluence, in Someret Co, just in case we do descend from Ezekiel.  I went to the courthouse in Washington Co hoping to find some deed that listed family members but I only found 2 deeds and no family members were listed (darn).  I think I read somewhere that Ezekiel did have a son named John but he was married to someone else (ie not Nancy Culbertson).  I'll can't find this but I'll keep looking.  Of course, Nancy could be a second wife.."

According to the Colman / Earle Family Tree at Ancestry.com, Ezekiel died in 1792.  [No other information is available. .. so why didn't he show up in the 1790 census?](REF)

And now for something fairly spooky.  ... as of 4/14/04

"In consideration whereby the said Don Juan Vaucheret transfers and conveys in full property to the said Don Carlos de Grand Pre, a tract of land situated on one of the branches of St. Catherine's Creek bounded by the lands of Don Juan Girault, Ezekiel Dewitt, Jermiah Bryan, and John Hartley, containing four hundred and fifty arpents, being that tract of land purchased by said Vaucheret at the Public Sale of John Stile Lee. "  This occured on 20 December, 1794 in the region around Natchez, Mississippi. (REF)

If Ezekiel DeWitt WAS the father of John DeWitt who was the father of Thomas HARTLEY DeWitt.... and we know that an Ezekiel DeWitt lived in Ohio Co., Va in 1776, and then IF Ezekiel moved on down the Ohio River to the Mississippi River, and then down to Natchez, Mississippi with his buddy John Hartley, maybe, just maybe, Thomas Hartley DeWitt DID have the Hartley middle name.   ......   ok.... I will stop hallucinating.

CONTROVERSY

1. Tjerck DeWitt's ancestors and descendants

Information for Tjerck comes from a multitude of sources and I have created a separate webpage for him at: TJERCK Because Tjerck and Barabara had so many children, there are literally hundreds of amateur / professional genealogists trying to figure out how they relate to them. As a consequence, an overwhelming  number of DeWitt descendants are scratching their heads wondering who begat whom.  To view a small reflection of that fervor visit the: Dewitt Family Genealogy Forum

My Wishful Thinking ancestry from Jan Dewitt (gen 1) to Tjerck DeWit (gen 12) is based primarily on the work of LaSaundra Berens found at: http://www.uftree.com/UFT/WebPages/lasaundra/FAMILY/d1/i0000344.htm#i344

Additional information was obtained from the ancestry written by Todd Allen Johnson located at: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=sandmich&id=I7609

Unfortunately, as so often the case, these two ancestries do not agree.  I have chosen LaSaundra Berens' work as the basis for this listing for generations 1 down to 12.  The most controversial aspect is the answer to the question of "Who were the parents of Claes (= Nicholas) Dewitt (gen 11). LaSaundra Berens' believes it was as Jan Dewitt (gen 10) while Todd Johnson believes it was Cornelius Fransz Dewitt. and Johanna Heymans. Another researcher, John DeWitt believes also that it was Jan Dewitt but he has problems with Jan Dewitt's parents.

Obviously I have no idea who to believe since I have done no research other than to read that of other genealogists.  {Well...I did drive up to Kingston and walk around the Old Dutch Reformed Church at Kingston, New York and I have gazed upon Tjerck's old home.)

For my DeWitt Ancestry webpage I have chosen LaSaundra Berens' version as a place to start, but as you will see, it does not work because of the availability of a Dutch Genealogy that shows the DeWitts from Jan (gen 1) to generation 10. This genealogy is available for inspection through John DeWitt's Tjerck Claessen De Witt Ancestry Research Page

Another reference is Doug Bradley 's webpage: Tjerck Claessen DeWitt webpage

Finally...
because there is so much controversy involved with the early DeWitt lineage link to Tjerck DeWitt and then controversy from Tjerck to OUR DeWitt line, I have listed the genealogy down to Johannes and Ezekiel DeWitt (gen 15) as WISHFUL THINKING.

2: The primary source of information for the family histories of Tjerck Claessen Dewitt through Johannes DeWitt was the family history: Rowley-King and Allied Families, by Homer King Rowley and Ruth McCammon Rowley, 1980, published by the authors.

I found this genealogy in the library in Ravenswood, WV.  I walked by it and pulled it out because it was so handsomly bound and I wondered how one goes about publishing a geneology.  I was floored when I found a chapter on the DeWitts and the Buffingtons!  I had been stuck up to that time and had not been able to find out any information on DeWitt's earlier than Thomas DeWitt.  Evon and I had arrived in Ravenswood in 1981 after I had discovered Buffington's Island in the Ohio River on a travel map.  We figured there had to be some good information awaiting us.  Boy it is sure lucky I was reading maps that day!

I corresponded with Ruth soon afterward just after Homer's death. She provided me with a copy of the genealogy and quite a bit of additional information.  I imagine at the date of this writing in July 2003, that Ruth has passed on as well as she was born in 1908.  I thank them for their efforts.

It should be noted that no one has been able to confirm OUR John DeWitt was the son of Johannes DeWitt.  Therefore this critical link is missing.  An alternative Wishful Thinking link can be found at Wishful Thinking 2: The Long Island Connection.

3. What does DeWitt mean?

De Witt means the white one.  To learn how this works read: DUTCH PATRONYMICS OF THE 1600s

4. How do you spell DeWitt?

There are many ways depending on the era, so if you are doing research try some of these:
For the spelling of names see (ref).  The following are spellings you should be aware of if you are digging around in the far past.
Die Witte, die Witte, DeWitt, DeWitte, deWit, deWitt, DeWitte, DeWith, dewitt
I have used the spelling of DeWitt as die Witte or de Wit for the first few generations based on John's webpage as I doubt DeWitt was spelled as DeWitt in the 1200s!

Another (or the same) Ezekiel DeWitt was living in Ohio county, Virginia in 1776 when the settlers gathered to decide upon the location of their future court:
"  (REF)

Ezekiel DeWitt was living in Ohio county when it started to become Ohio County in 1776 (See quote below map.)  Note that in 1776, (see 1780 PA map above) the southwest corner of PA was simply Westmoreland Co.

Westmoreland Co. is where John DeWitt met Nancy Culbertson and where their first-born son, Thomas was born about 1789.

Just below Wood county, is Jackson Co (1831) where John DeWitt and his family ended up by 1807.
