And now for the famous
John Dewitt

Virginia

Here is all the known information about OUR John Dewitt:
(and an introduction about a possible father: Ezekiel Dewitt who was in the same area.)

FACTS
  • 1760:
    • One of John's possible fathers, Ezekiel Dewitt married Maria Keller on 6 Apr 1760 in Kaatsbaan, Ulster Co., NY.  (ancestry.com)
  • 1768:
    • Ezekiel DeWitt was living in the area around today's Confluence, PA in Turkeyfoot Township in Bedford Co. (later Somerset Co.), Pennsylvania:
      • According to authentic records, namely, the testimony of Rev. Capt. John Steel, who visited this locality in April, 1768 the following persons were then resident at or near Turkeyfoot: Henry Abrahams, Ezekiel Dewitt, James Spencer, Benjamin Jennings, John Cooper, Ezekiel Hichman, John Enslow, Henry Enslow and Benjamin Pursley. Some of these doubtless lived within the bounds of Addison Township (which was created in 1800.)  (REF)  This area is very close to subsequent sightings of Ezekiel listed below.
    • Click HISTORY to read a chronologial history of the region and DETAILED to read more about the details.
    • The Turkeyfoot is the junction of  the Castleman's river and the Laurel Hill Creek, also known as the North fork, with the Youghiogheny river [pronounced yah-kuh-GAIN-ee.] . (REF)
    • Here is the map of the region as of 2004:
    • somerset county
  • 1776:
    • John's possible father, Ezekiel Dewitt was living in Ohio County, Virginia in 1776 when the settlers gathered to decide upon the location of their future court:
In compliance with the provisions of said Act of the General Assembly, and of certain instructions addressed to him, John McColloch, Esq., summoned the landholders within the county to convene, on the 27th day of December, 1776, at the cabin of Ezekiel Dewitt, Esq., situated on Buffalo Creek, for the purpose of electing and constituting a committee in said county, and also to make choice of a place where county courts were to be held in future in said county. The convention met at the time and place mentioned, and by a vote of the majority of those present decided in favor of Black's Cabin, situated on the water of Short Creek.   The present site of West Liberty was originally improved by Abraham Vanmetre. His daughter Ruth married Reuben Foreman, and another daughter named Hannah married Providence Mounts. Foreman and Mounts laid out the town of West liberty, which was organized November 20, 1787. It was the first town organized in the Ohio Valley.  (History of Wheeling and Ohio Co, WV, printed in 1902: REF)
    • As you can see below, Ohio County is VERY close to Westmoreland Co., PA where John Dewitt was first detected in 1790Note that in 1776, (map) the southwest corner of PA was simply Westmoreland Co.  This map is a 2004 map.

    • Ezekiel had a license for keeping an ordinary (tavern) in Washington Co., PA.  (ref)
    • Westmoreland county (11) had been divided up in July 1781 to form Washington (12) and Fayette (13) counties.
1785
  • 1782:
    • Census, Hopewell Twp lists 400 acres of land, 2 horses, 4 cows, 2 slaves. Land grant for 400 acres dated 24 Feb 1782. (REFThere is a Hopewell township in Washingto Co., PA.  I assume this is the location.  (REF)
      • Where is Hopewell Township?
There is a Hopewell township in Beaver Co., PA.  Is this the location?  (REF)  In 1800, Hopewell Township did not exist in Beaver Co., however. (REFBeaver County, Pennsylvania is located in the southwest part of the state, and was carved out of Washington and Allegheny Counties in 1800.... so in 1782, Hopewell Township would have been in a different named county.  In 1814, the southern townships were reorganized into four approximately equal quarters and given the names Hopewell, Moon, Green and Hanover Townships. (REF)

There is a Hopewell township in Washington Co., PA (REF).  It is the seventh of the list of original townships of Washington County, formed July 15, 1781, embraced at the time of its erection the territory of the present townships of Hopewell, Independence, Cross Creek, and Jefferson, and part of that of Mount Pleasant.  (REF)

  • 1786-7:
    • From Cheryl Gallagher (4/12/04):
I'm not sure if I mentioned this before, but Cathy Green also believes we  descend from Ezekiel DeWitt.  When I was in PA, I stopped by the courthouse  in Washington Co.  I only found 2 references to Ezekiel DeWitt - Deed Book  1D, p. 86 deed to Casper Rumenagh recorded 7 Aug 1787 and Deed Book 1C, p. 31-33  deed to Joseph Jones recorded 26 Apr 1786.  They did not mention  any other DeWitts.
    • From Cheryl Gallagher (4/18/04):
      W
hile I was in Westmoreland Co, PA a couple of years ago, I made a point to stop by Confluence, in Someret Co, just in case we do descend from Ezekiel.  I went to the courthouse in Washington Co hoping to find some deed that listed family members but I only found 2 deeds and no family members were listed (darn).  I think I read somewhere that Ezekiel did have a son named John but he was married to someone else (ie not Nancy Culbertson).  I can't find this but I'll keep looking.  Of course, Nancy could be a second wife...
  • 1790:
1790
    • In the 1790 census for Westmoreland Co, PA in Hempfield Township, John Culbertson and a John Dewit were listed next to each other which I assume means they lived next to each other. (Westmoreland Co, is county 11 above and below.)  The date was 14 April 1790. So I guess what had happened is that John DeWitt fell in love with Nancy Culbertson, and married her. Then they settled down in the house next to her father. John Dewit was listed as living with one female who we can assume was Nancy.  I viewed the census record at Ancestry.com but was unable to find the month and day date of the census.  However their first son Thomas is said to have been born in 1789, so why was he not listed as an infant when the census was taken in 1790?  Perhaps Thomas was not born in 1789?  There is obviously more to the story than was passed down through the years. (Click on Culbertson to see my CulbertsonAncestry website.)
    • 1790 Map of Pennsylvania Counties:
      • County 13 is Fayette Co., county 12 is Washington Co., county 11 is Westmoreland Co.  and county 9 is Bedford Co.

    • In 1790, Virginia had changed too!
wv1790
  • I have not found any reference to Ezekiel Dewitt in the 1790 census.
  • 1792:
    • According to the Colman / Earle Family Tree at Ancestry.com, Ezekiel Dewitt died in 1792.  He was married to Maria Keller. In this genealogy, his father was Jan Dewitt and his mother was Ariaantje Osterhoundt. No other information is available to prove that connection. (REF)
    • Recently I have found information that puts doubt on the idea that Ezekiel was our John Dewitt's father.
    • Some references state that Ezekiel's son John's wife was Catharine Quick rather than Nancy Culbertson. (ref)

  • 1800: map of WV area
    • There is no census record for Virginia in 1800.
    • No John Dewit is listed in PA in 1800 either.
    • A John Culbertson is listed as living in Hopewell Township, Washington Co, PA in 1800
    • Washington Co Map 1800
    • But he supposedly died in 1797????  If he did, then Margaret Culbertson should be listed in the 1800 census, but I can not find her. One is listed (Margart Culbertson) in Cecil Co, MD but she is under 45.
    • The West Virginia area before WV was WV in 1800 is shown below:

  • 1807:
    • The first settler at Muse's Bottom, Virginia, (See map above.) was John DeWitt (some of the old settlers pronounce it Doo-it), who built the first cabin, in 1807. (from "Pioneers of Jackson County", by John House, where it appears in the Section "Lower Sandy Valley".)
    • (Across the river in Ohio, there is also a DeWitt Run (a creek) across from Muses Bottom. (Did you see DeWitt Cemetery ?... It was not used for a few more years.))
  • 1810:
    • A John Dewit shows up in the 1810 census of Mason Co., VA

      • By the statement, he was then born about 1758 assuming he was a few months more than just 61 years old.
      • Rumor has it that he was buried in the Dewitt Cemetery near Murraysville, WV, (which is now located in Jackson Co, WV) but his grave has been destroyed sometime through the years (perhaps during the 1960s) due to collapse of the cliff due to nearby quarry activity.  In 1981 and 2008 I visited the cemetery and his gravestone was not evident.
    • Again by 1820, Virginia's counties had moved around.

    • Son of John DeWitt, Thomas "Duett" is listed with 4 male children and 2 female children along with a wife less than 40 and himself older than 40, living in Mason Co, VA.  A John Duett is also listed.

      • The Thomas Duett males could be: Joel(<15), John (<10), Culbertson (<5) and Alexander (<5) plus Thomas (but he should be 40-1.)
      • The Thomas Duett females could be: Nancy (<10), Lydia (<15), and Magdaline (<40)
    • Who is John Duett?
      • Probably Thomas's younger brother John who would be 38, but this shows 4 children living with he and his wife, Catherine Derenberger.  The problem is that they supposedly had no children. (See above Children of John Dewitt, Sr.)
    • Regarding Nancy Culbertson Dewitt....
      • Henry Sherman(<40)  is listed living in Mason Co, VA with 1 boy under 5, 1 girl under 20 and 1 female under 30 (wife Phoebe?--daughter of John and Nancy DeWitt) PLUS 1 female under 60.... could this be the MISSING Mother of Phoebe?  Nancy Culbertson DeWitt, widower?  She would be 60 in 1830.  Henry Sherman is listed on the same page as Issac B. Sherman, husband of John and Nancy's daughter, Nancy Elizabeth Dewitt.
  • 1840:
    • Henry Sherman(<50)  is listed living in Jackson Co, VA with 2 boys under 5, 2 boys under 10, 1 girl under 30 and 1 female under 20? (wife Phoebe?--daughter of John and Nancy DeWitt) PLUS 1 female under 70.... could this be the MISSING Mother of Phoebe?  Nancy Culbertson DeWitt, widower?  She would be 70 in 1840.

  • 1841:
    • Nancy Culbertson Dewitt who was born in 1770 died on 15 Aug 1841.  (Click on her name to see my new CulbertsonAncestry website.)
      • Rumor has it that she was buried in the Dewitt Cemetery near Murraysville, WV, (which is now located in Jackson Co, WV) but her grave has been destroyed sometime through the years due to collapse of the cliff due to nearby quarry activity.  I have visited the cemetery and her gravestone was not evident.
        • John was born about 1740/41 in PA ???.  He was listed in the 1790 Westmoreland Co, census. He died in 1797 in Hempfield Twp, Westmoreland Co, PA. When he died, he left a widow, Margaret. It is not know for sure that she is the mother of his children.

Probably because he was born in 1790 or later. The fact that he didn't show up in 1790 is a pretty good indication that he wasn't born yet, although we know how poor  (really rotten) some census records are. In 1850 he was 55, in 1860 he was 65 and in 1870, he was 78. All of those indicate he was born after 1790.  Jackson County death records show he died 3/12/1879, age 88, while his gravestone shows he died 3/16/1879, aged 90. While the Jackson Co death records are a total mess, I think the census data supports that age more than the gravestone which may have been bought later by someone who may have not known exact dates or his exact age, since so many people were not quite so sure of facts then.

There is a Rhodes who lived about that same time period who was supposed to have been over 100 when he died. Census records indicate a different story. So while it's obvious that so many people had no real idea of their ages, when they are consistent from one census to the next, I have to assume that they are at least CLOSE to the right age.

So maybe Thomas was born in 1791 which would be consistent with the 1790 census information about his father.

Because
parents John & Nancy did not move to (W)VA until about 1800

Also, in 1850 and 1870 censuses, she is listed as being born in PA. (But 1860 listed as VA)

John W Rayrdon and his family of 13 children and wife were living near Henry Sherman (with wife Phoebe DeWitt, (Martha's sister) in 1840 in Jackson Co, VA.

In 1860 the family was listed as Rardon in ancestry.com

Hannah's father Cornelius Woodruff was married to a Mary Osborn however.

Nancy Elizabeth F 1801 or
1803
probably VA

Because she died so early in life, her name is not listed on any census record.  Family members were not listed in 1810, 1820 or 1830 censuses.

Son Henry's 1900 census record stated that his mother was born in WV.

Daughter Sarah's 1880, 1900 and 1910 census records stated that her mother was born in VA.

Daughter Elizabeth's 1880, 1900 and 1910 census records stated that her mother was born in VA.

SInce parents moved to Muses Bottom VA in 1807, Nancy's VA birthstate suggests that the family lived somewhere else in VA around 1801.  One suggestion is Belleville, Wood Co, VA which is just a few miles up the Ohio River.  Fort Belleville was a place of safety during the Amerindian war of the 1790s.  One ref suggests the Dewitts lived there before arriving in Mason Co VA in 1807.

Letart Falls, Meigs County, OH, is down river along the Ohio River from Muses Bottom, WV  where the DeWitt clan spread from.

OFrom Cheryl Gallagher
Also buried in
Letart Falls Cem, Letart, OH. is William A. Robinson and
two of his children:
John Robinson (died 13 Aug 1874

age 4m18d) and Lydia E. Robinson (died 23 Nov 1884 age 9y4m8d).

In a recent note (4/12/04) she states
Jerome Sheridan Robinson was named after Gen. Philip Sheridan.   Rumor has it (I can't seem to prove it yet) that his father, William A. Robinson, served  in the Civil War under Gen. Sheridan.

FindAGrave

In ancestry.com I found a reference for a Samuel Hall who was born 1 Jan 1798 in Rockbridge Co, VA.

It also stated that he died in the same county... which is somewhat doubtful if he was buried in Dewitt Cemetery in what was then Wood Co.

also listed in H.D. Somerville's History of Grant District in the Dewitt Cemetery section

There is a Samuel Hall living in Wood Co, VA in the 1830 census but he has 2 boys and 2 girls under 5.  Both parents are listed as <30.  If they married in 1829, then this may not be them unless they had 4 kids in the first year!!

There is a Samuel D Hall living Harrison Co, VA in 1830 which is just east of Wood Co.  He was listed with 3 female and 2 male children along with a wife, so this fits better.

Henry (<40)  is listed living in Mason Co, VA with 1 boy under 5, 1 girl under 20 and 1 female under 30 (wife Phoebe?) PLUS 1 female under 60.... could this be the MISSING Mother of Phoebe?  Nancy Culbertson DeWitt, widower?  She would be 60 in 1830.

In 1840, he is living in Jackson Co, VA with his family and a woman <70... which could again be Nancy Culbertson DeWitt, who died in 1841.

In 1850, they were listed as living in Jackson Co, VA near Phoebe's father. Phoebe listed as born in VA.

In 1860, they are living next door to sister Charlotte Hall and family (see above).  Children listed are Herod, Huldy, Wm, HT, Geo N, John S, HM

There is a town named Sherman near Buffington Island. See map

He is probably brother to Isaac B Sherman (see above)

Please visit John Dewitt's main website for more details:  JOHN DEWITT

^    Is it West Virginia or Virginia?... YES, MAYBE, NO... it depends on what year you are talking about.
  • West Virgina became a state in 1863 at the beginning of the Civil War, so dates referring to Virginia before that time and West Virginia after that time could be only a reflection of statehood rather than people moving.

Comments: Could these two boys be the John C and James D who lived with Thomas and Magdalene DeWitt from 1860-1880 and who are listed as grandsons in 1880?? I have a list that states that Dallas J Dewit was 18 in 8/18/1863 when he was a member of the 141st militia... so that would make his birthday in 1845... which is consistent with him being Dallas 'Dal'.

In 1850, Jas (James) was living with Thomas Dewitt and family in District 27, Jackson Co, VA.  James was listed as age 6 which suggests a birth in 1844.

In 1860, he was living at age 15 with uncle Alexander DeWitt at the home of Jesse Carney.

He mustered in in the JACKSON COUNTY HOME GUARD in
Murraysville, 8/18/63 in
Captain George L Kennedy's Company.
HE mustered out 5/30/65.

Captain George L Kennedy's Company of W. Va. State Troops, was mustered at Ripley, Ravenswood & Murraysville, August 1863 through October 1863.

(ref)

In 1880, James D. (30) was living with his grandmother Mary M. Dewitt in Jackson Co, WV.  He was born in WV and his father was born in WV and his mother was born in OH.

On 28 Jun 1900 James D DeWitt (44) was living with his brother John C (42) with Mary Rowland (45) in Grant District, Jackson Co, WV.  This document claims he was born Apr 1856 in WV.

In 1910, J Dallas Dewitt (65) was living with his brother John Dewitt (60) and cousin Mary Rowland (63) in Grant, Jackson Co, WV

On 6 Jan 1920, John C Dewitt (69) was living  with his cousin Mary Roland (72) and servant Harvey Beltis (72) in Grant District (Milhoan Precinct).
It appears that they are still living in the DeWitt farm. It appears that James had died or was living elsewhere.

Comments: Information about Virginia, John and Dallas also in records of Jackie Ryland.

Virginia and William's children were Ada Ethel, William, John and St. Clair.

Living with Thomas DeWitt (her grandfather) and family in 1850 at age 4.

Living near grandfather Thomas DeWitt in 1870 in Grant Township, Jackson Co, WV.

Living near Lagrange family also (probably William's parents Omie & Elizabeth?)

Living in Bates Township, Carroll Co, MO, on 1 Jun 1880 with first two children.

since son John B was born in MO, they must have moved to MO before 1876.

In 1900, they were living in Fresno, CA.  Since son Ima was born in CA in 1884, they must have moved to Fresno before that date.

In 1910, William and Virginia were still living in Fresno, CA alone.

4. John Calvin
     b. abt 1848
     d. abt 1930 (ref)

Comment: The Jackson Co WV  1880 census states that John C. was listed as a grandson of Mary M Dewitt, surviving wife of Thomas.

Could John C, be John and Mary A (Romaine) DeWitt's son John Calvin?
(see above.)

John and Mary died in 1848-1849 quite young perhaps of an infectious disease and since John Calvin was born sometime between 1844-1848, maybe John Calvin went to live with his grandparents Thomas and Magdalena DeWitt and thereby showed up as age 2 in 1850 census, 12 in the 1860 census,  20 in 1870 census and 27 in 1880 census?

In 1880, Jno C. (27) was living with his grandmother Mary M.

This document claims John was born May 1858 in WV.

I can not find John after that except for an ancestry.com OneWorldTree ref that suggests he died in 1930.

Not married -- Comments:
#1 His name listed here is taken from the spelling on his tombstone which I visited in 1981 and have a photo of.
He was probably named after his mother's family Culbertson, so the tombstone engraver may have made a mistake.... or

#2 If Culberson was born in April, how was Alexander born in October?)
