CJSS Module Mania Years

South Grand Arbor Module 2007

Erie Railroad engine house

This photo was originally published in the May/June 1988 issue of S-Gaugian in an article I wrote for Don Heimberger's Write Up Your Railroadcontest.  I wrote about my imaginary layout which only consisted of my module.

This building was kitbashed from a Korber O-scale Trolley barn kit.  The roof was scratch built.  It is shown on the right in the module plan below.

The EL diesels FP-7, E-8, FP-7 were custom painted and are owned by Doug Miller.  The FP-7s are American Models while the E8 is one of the first series of E8s produced by Overland  Models.  Decals are Microscale.  The wrecking crane was kitbashed by Vic Roseman from a HO Gould kit. Telephone poles are Lehigh Valley Models.

All turnouts are code 100 by Old Pullman. There are over 20 in this module.

Photo taken by Don DeWitt in 1987.

This engine house is now owned by Bill Lane, as is most of the module.
The module was sold to Jack Bartman in 2004.  He incorporated it into
his basement layout in various pieces.  Some sections were taken apart.

module

In October 2006, Bill Lane purchased 24 ft of modules on Ebay from Jack.  So happily, the module is back in the possession of a long time friend.  However Bill plans to incorporate the module into his new layout as well.... so it is doubtful that the module will ever be used as a module again.  I AM pleased that it still lives 20 years after its birth. You can follow the module's next fate on Bill Lane's website.

Erie Railroad diesel service

As the diesels pull out of the engine house they enter the service area shown above.

The sanding towers are brass Overland Models.  The various fuel tanks are HO kitbashes. The storage buildings are scratchbuilt.  The fueling towers are kitbashed HO also.  The large light tower is also HO. The cement platform is scribed sheet styrene.

The gorgeous D&H PA is a American Flyer kitbash with massive reworking by Stan Stokrocki. This diesel has to be my most coveted model Stan has made!  The sand car is a brass Overland Models covered hopper owned and custom painted for Erie by Don DeWitt.

Photo taken by Don DeWitt in 1987 at Rail Expo VII at the Central Jersey Railroad station in Liberty State Park in NJ when the Central Jersey S Scalers set up a large modular layout.

Grand Arbor Module (east end)

Don DeWitt works with his computer during the 1989 Central Jersey S Scalers' Get- Together at Christ Church in South Amboy, NJ. Surfing the internet on his Zenith Z-100 computer? Nope....creating operating session switching lists!  This was a one-time effort as we found it impractical to enter all of the data into the computer.  And some people who like to just run trains found it boring to run switching sessions.

That is Mr. John Bortz watching over the action in the background.
