Introduction:
The purpose of this series of homework assignments, is to direct your attention to the similarities and differences between the molecules of life.  With this year's change in the "in-class" structure there will be fewer opportunities for you to practice drawing molecules so the sometimes subtle differences will be more difficult to appreciate.  To address this learning-style problem, this homework requires that you take a pen or pencil and draw molecules!  You may NOT use a computer to draw the molecules but you should type your discussions (short ones!).  You may certainly use a computer to research the molecules of interest.  Of course, your class notes provided by the instructor should be sufficient.

The Task:

Triglycerides:*

a.
Explain and show how to synthesize a triglyceride (TG) from its building blocks which must include the following in any order:
one stearic acid, one oleic acid, and one arachidonic acid
b.
How are fatty acids classified?
c. What are the functions of triglycerides?  Where do they "live"?
d. What are trans fats and why are the bad for you?
.
Soaps:* a. What are soaps and how do they work?
(Note: The Lung surfactant discussion section of my notes (pages 48-61) is about a protein surfactant. In your notes I erroneously listed it as a phospholipid topic.  You do not need to talk about it in the DTM at all but you are responsible for it on the PPAO.)
.
Phospholipids:* a. How do you make a phospholipid (PL) from its building blocks?
b. What are the functions of phospholipids? Where do they "live"?
(Note: The Lung surfactant discussion is about a protein surfactant. Even though it is presented in the phospholipid section it should not be discussed as a phospholipid function.)
.
Steroids:*
a. What is the basic structure of steroids?  Show three specific examples.
b. What are the functions of steroids? Where do they "live"?
c. What are anabolic steroids? How do they work and why are they bad for you?  Use: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anabolic_steroid
.
Waxes:* a. How do you make a wax from its building blocks?
b. What are the functions of waxes? Where do they "live"?
* Note: Whether I ask for a graphic or ask for a discussion, ALL answers require graphic support.  In fact... I always look at your graphics first to get a sense of the likelihood of a perfect score on a question.

Formatting Rules:

General formatting rules may be found at:  http://users.bergen.org/dondew/bio/AnP/AnP1/AnPformat.html

Please create a typed document with hand-drawn graphics which can be placed in boxed areas on your document.  There is no page limit on this assignment but please do not draw huge molecules (e.g. a triglyceride larger than 3 inches is probably getting tooo big!)  Very tiny molecules are difficult to read too.
If I need to use a magnifying glass to read your graphics... you will not enjoy your grade!
