A & P Course Overview:

  • Anatomy and Physiology I (A&P I) is our 11th grade core, year-long course for all AMST students, while Anatomy and Physiology II (A&P II) is an elective year-long course available only to 12th grade AMST students who completed A&P I in good standing.  NOTE: Class of 2011 students: During the 2010-2011 school year, A&P II will be offered only with two sections which means that admission to the course will be competitive.  A&P I in-class examination average will be the only performance used for invitation for admission to A&P II.

  • A&P I is the major core biology course around which the Academy of Medical Science Technology (AMST) student focuses his or her studies at Bergen County Academies (BCA).  A&P I meets four days per week for three mods (51 minutes) each day. During 2009-2010, A&P I meets during mods 13-15, 16-18 and 19-21. This course provides an in-depth background in a select area of anatomy and physiology with a major focus on cell physiology and the first two units in neuroscience at an introductory college level.
    • Units of Study
      • Cell Physiology:
        • Unit 1: Carbohydrate Biochemistry
        • Unit 2: Protein Biochemistry
        • Unit 3: Lipid Biochemistry
        • Unit 4: Nucleic Acid Biochemistry
        • Unit 5: Gene Expression and Protein Synthesis
        • Unit 6: Cell Metabolism: The production of ATP
        • Unit 7: Molecular Movements
      • Neuroscience:
        • Unit 1: Homeostasis
        • Unit 2: The Neuron
    • Trimester Organization
      • 1: Units CP 1-4
      • 2: Units CP 5-6
      • 3: Units CP 7 and N 1-2

  • A&P II is a continuation course for 12th grade AMST students who completed A&P I in good standing.  In 2009-2010 the course will meet with 2 sections twice per week during mods 4-6.  NOTE: Class of 2011 students: During the 2010-2011 school year, A&P II will be offered only with two sections which means that admission to the course will be competitive.  A&P I in-class examination average will be the only performance used for invitation for admission to A&P II.
    • The focus of the course is neuroscience with the following units:
      • Unit 3: The Spine
      • Unit 4: The Spinal Cord
      • Unit 5: Cranial Nerves
      • Unit 6: Endocrinology
      • Unit 7: General Sensors
      • Unit 8: Special Senses: Vision
      • Unit 9: Special Senses: Hearing
      • Unit 10: Special Senses: Olfaction
      • Unit 11: Special Senses: Taste
      • Unit 12: The Brain
    • Trimester Organization
      • 1: Units N 3-6
      • 2: Units N 7-9
      • 3: Units N 10-12
  • Additional Anatomy and Physiology courses:
    • Immunology
      • The study of the immune system is available through Immunology I and II.
        • These courses will run during trimester 2 (Immuno I)  and 3 (Immuno 2).  They will run during mods 25-27.
    • Cardiovascular Anatomy and Physiology
      • The study of the cardiovascular system is available through CV A&P.
        • This course will run during trimester 2 and then again in trimester 3.  It will run during mods 25-27.  In this course the use of SimMan will enhance the understanding of blood pressure, respiratory rate, and electrocardiology.

A & P Course Instructor:

  • Dr. Don DeWitt was formally educated at the Univeristy of Michigan where he was awarded a PhD in the area of cardiovascular physiology.  He is a former Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology. He has taught physiology concepts to various students ranging from high school to collegiate undergraduate, nursing, medical, and graduate students since 1973. Dr. D. is the first biology instructor at Bergen County Academies and was instrumental in the creation of the science curriculum in AAST and AEDT.  He currently teaches core courses for AEDT and AMST. He also teaches a number of electives in biology and physiology. All of his courses may be accessed at Dr. DeWitt's Websites Index.

A & P Resources:

  • Textbooks:
Hole's Essentials of
Human Anatomy and Physiology

8th ed. 2003,
by Shier, Butler, and Lewis
Biology
5th ed., 1999
by
Campbell, Reece & Mitchell
campbell
Hole's Essentials of Human Anatomy
and Physiology will be used for A&P
during all trimesters as an introductory
reference.

Biology will be used primarily
during trimester 1 and 2 of A&P I
as a resource for our study
of Cell Physiology.  Any out-of-date
information will be correctd by the instructor.

  • Additional:
THE major source of information in this course will be a collection of notes that you will create through class room activities.  The famous PANELS will bring to you the latest information on each topic.  Please bring to class a 3-ring notebook that will allow you to efficiently and safely store your precious class notes.

Please visit the website for each trimester for more information. Scroll down to access these websites.
