Anatomy and Physiology 2, Trimester 1
with Dr. Don DeWitt (v1 as of  8 / 30 / 09)
Go to A&P 2 Due Dates

Introduction:
Our major topics for this trimester are the spine and spinal cord, so please explore the news for interesting articles about the associated systems in health and disease.

Each submission should summarize an article you have found in newspapers (e.g., NY Times Tuesday Science Times Section or the NY Times Science / Health online version which requires you to register), newsmagazines (Time, Newsweek, etc.) or the internet. Summary topics should match the material under study during the current trimester. Summaries of topics appropriate for future or previous trimesters will be returned with loss of credit due to a late submission.

The topics for the trimester are:

  1. CUREV1: spine
  2. CUREV2: spine
  3. CUREV3: spinal cord
  4. CUREV4: spinal cord

Discoveries about structures or processes with regard to their normal physiology or abnormal condition (pathology) are acceptable topics. During any trimester you may use the same overall topic listed above, but the subject of the research paper you are reviewing should not be the same.  For instance, a paper on the brain, and then a second on the nerves of your hands are fine topics, but two articles on the brain is not appropriate.

Formatting Rules:

Your current events summary should be one-half page using the formatting rules found at: http://users.bergen.org/dondew/bio/AnP/AnPformat.html

To summarize, all papers must be submitted on 8.5 x 11 inch white copy or printer paper and written in vertical (portrait) mode using 0.75 inch margins, with 12 pt Times (or equivalent font such as Times Roman) black font, that is single spaced (defined as 5 lines per vertical inch) and a half page in length. There is a leeway of plus or minus three lines with regard to the half page requirement.

In the upper right corner within the top margin, (a.k.a., the header) you should include the following information:

Your Name
A&P II
Current Events #?
Date submitted: ??/??/??

An 18 pt bold title for the article that reflects the topic must be included. At the bottom of your summary, write the URL or Reference for the article.... OR... attach a copy of the article behind the first page with a staple.  If you find rules confusing, please view the example in room 242.

Advice:

If you find a long article (longer than 2 pages),  such as a nine page Scientific American article for this assignment, then bravo for you, but you are choosing the wrong type of article. You may summarize this article but it will be more difficult than a shorter one.

Please do not trivialize this assignment.  Five percent of your final grade for both papers can change your letter grade from an A- to a B+ if for instance you choose to ignore this assignment.

This is the ONLY assignment all year long in which graphics support is not expected or allowed.

Discoveries about structures or processes with regard to their normal physiology or abnormal condition (pathology) are acceptable topics.
