What is A&P II?

Anatomy and Physiology II is an elective available to AMST seniors only.  It is a continuation of the study of the human body that was started in Anatomy and Physiology I taken during the 11th grade as a required AMST focus course.

We realize that some students have other priorities during their senior year and we believe that all seniors have the right to design their schedule with regard to any course that is not mandated by the state of New Jersey.  This statement assumes that each student has satisfied their graduation requirements for AMST.

A&P II is offered with two sections rather than the three sections associated with A&P I because some students will decide to chose a different course.  Some students choose AP Psychology, AP Biology, AP Physics or AP Chemistry as either an alternate or in addition to A&P II.  Some students are involved with the International Baccalaureat program and will not have time for A&P II and other electives.

The bottom line is that the expectation is that any student in
A&P II is highly motivated to learn about the fascinating topics presented in this course.

Overview

During trimester 2,
we continue our exploration of neuroscience with:
  1. completion of our look at inbound and outbound pathways to the CNS via the cranial nerves.
  2. an overview of outbound pathways:
    1. somatic nervous system to skeletal muscle
    2. endocrine systems
  3. an exploration of inbound systems:
    1. general senses
    2. vision
In trimestery 3, we will continue with the other special senses with our study of audition (hearing) and equilibrium (balance), gustation (taste) and olfaction (smell). Upon conclusion of our sensory study we will review the major parts of the brain bringing to conclusion our study of the sensory side as well as the integrating centers of the nervous system

During the study of the Cardiovascular, Respiratory and Excretory systems, students will be given the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of concepts by:
  • answering
    • Exams (aka PPAO*): (25% each)
      • ONE In-class PPAO* (PPAO1) on the cranial nerves, skeletal muscle, catecholamines
      • ONE In-class PPAO* (PPAO2) on endocrinology, general senses and vision
  • writing
    • Current Events Reviews (5% each)
      • FOUR Current Events Reviews on:
        • ONE : New Culprits in Chronic Pain
(1.5 page summary: You will be emailed the Sci. Am. article.)
        • ONE: Playing Defense against Lou Gehrig's Disease

(1.5 page summary: You will be emailed the Sci. Am. article.)
        • ONE 0.5 page review: Skeletal Muscle
        • ONE 0.5 page review: TBA
    • Research Papers (15% each)
