The world of biology may be broken into different sub-worlds of study.

Depending on your interests you may wish to explore all of the sub-worlds or remain within one area. Hopefully this Biology Department Electives Sitemap will enable you to make an intelligent choice.

Notes:
1. Please click on any name for more information about the course or group of courses.
2. In general, electives are available to 10-12th grade students with the assumption that an introductory core biology course has been taken in 9th grade or during 10th grade (AAST and AEDT). There are some electives that REQUIRE completion of a core biology course so those are unavailable for AAST and AEDT students during the 10th grade.
The only electives that are exclusive are the:
11th or 12th grade only : IB Environmental Systems
12th grade only: AP Biology and AP Psychology.
and Anatomy and Physiology 2 is available only to 12th grade AMST students.
3. Not all electives may be used for satisfaction of graduation requirements for AAST or AMST such as biology  research.  Please check each course description for further information at: Bio Electives Descriptions
4. Most electives are offered only once per year, and with only one section. Electives offered more than once per year are: Intro Anat. & Physio. (tri 1-3), Bioethics (tri 1-3), ExpSci1 (tri 1-2), ExpSci2 (tri 1-3), PCS (tri 1 & 3), and Zoology (tri 1-3). Electives offered with more than one section during the trimester offered are:  ExpSci1 (tri 1-2) and ExpSci2 (tri 1-3).
5. Please try to avoid taking electives just because they are available in the time slot that you have open. Lack of insight into the nature of the elective you are choosing, often leads to academic disaster.
6. The difficulty of courses varies significantly, depending on the curriculum, your maturity, and your motivation. Some courses are designed as introductory experiences while others are created for those students planning a career in some area of the biological sciences. Some courses are designed for serious students in the upper grades. (e.g., Dev. Bio., Immunology, VirologyMol. Bio. 3-4 and Oncology) although a few 10th grade students enroll. A significantly different experience can be attained in a challenging course if you postpone it until your junior or senior year. Under NO circumstances is AP Biology or AP Psychology available to anyone other than seniors (or GLE juniors) who have shown a strong performance in previous biology courses.
7. Do not overload your schedule and then expect elective or core teachers to accept your "I have so much homework to do." excuses.  Significant extracurricular activity involvement should also be a sign to decrease your elective load.
9. To view a schedule of when our electives are offered, please go to: Electives Schedule Overview
