Jefferson Swanger Dead. From the Green City Press, Green City, Missouri, Thursday, July 6, 1916 (Thanks to Karen Scott, Grand Junction, CO (ref1)  and Jaunita Hall, Milan, MO) Uncle "Jeff" Swanger, of Milan father of Jno. E. Swanger, Republican candidate for governor, died last Friday morning, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Wm. Cochran, in his 87th year.  Up until a few months ago, when the illness developed that resulted in his death, Mr. Swanger enjoyed excellent health. He was one of Sullivan County's very best citizens, loved by everyone. He served the county two terms as treasurer and was twice  appointed postmaster at Milan, during the terms of President McKinley and President Roosevelt. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the presence of one of the largest concourses of people ever gathered on such an occasion.  Presiding Elder W. F. Burrus, of the M. E. church, his former pastor, conducted the services. A large number of Green City people went to Milan to attend the funeral, and to pay their last respect to one of the county's most upright and honored citizens. Sarah Ann (Camp) Swanger From the Milan Standard, Milan, Missouri,  Thursday, Oct. 8, 1903 (Thanks to Karen Scott, Grand Junction, CO and Jaunita Hall, Milan, MO) On Tuesday evening, September 22, just as the sun of day sank into the arms of restful night, death came and claimed a wife and mother in our city. For three years she had patiently suffered while disease preyed upon her body, but at last unable longer to be the burden of pain she sank into death's cold embrace and her spirit wended its way to the God who gave it, and a devoted husband and loving children and grand children mourn the loss of one who had won their heart's deepest affection. The wife and mother who thus passed away was Sarah Ann (Camp) Swanger, wife of Jefferson Swanger. She was born in Huntington County, Penn., April 30th, 1833. She was one of a family of nine children, eight sisters and one brother. Of this number only the brother, John Camp, who now lives at Milroy, Pa., and sister, Mrs. Martha Working, living at Abilene, Kas., survive. Her early life was spent in and near Milroy, Pa., where on Jan'y 23, 1857, she was united in marriage to Jefferson Swanger. Of this union eight children were born six of whom still live. In 1859 the husband and wife moved to Milan, Sullivan County, Missouri, where they resided until her death. In all those years of wedded life the wife and mother devoted herself to the welfare of her family, and no husband was ever blest with a truer companion nor children ever loved with a deeper, more unselfish love. In her daily walk she sought not for the world's applause -- home was her citadel and duty her guiding star. She was kind to all, and won the love of all who knew her, and when she died friends who had felt her kindly sympathy and knew her motherly virtues mourned because she had blest them in life. Hers was a Christian life. She trusted implicitly in the promises of God, obeyed his admonitions and died in the trumps of a christian's faith. Her funeral was conducted from the family residence at 2:30 pm Thursday, the 24th. The funeral service were led by Rev. J. S. Howard, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church, and the sermon was preached by Rev. W. F. Burris, of Macon, Mo., presiding elder of the Hannibal district, from the test: "I go to prepare a place." The sermon was a beautiful and eloquent portrayal of the Heaven of the Christian and was pronounced one of the best ever hear on like occasion in our city. Appropriate music was rendered by a double quartet of singers after which she tenderly borne to Oakwood cemetery where in her windowless palace of rest she awaits the resurrection. "God's will, not ours be done." Her pure life, her sacrifice, her love are a monument of beauty to which those who loved her so may ever look and remember that she was what God designed motherhood to be. A Long and Useful Life Ended - 57 Years a Resident of Sullivan County At 1 o’clock a.m. Friday, June 30th 1916, at his home in this city, Jefferson Swanger passed on, aged 86 years and 1 month, after an illness of about 4 months of infirmities of age. Jefferson Swanger was the son of Ephriam and Sarah Swanger. He was born in Union County Pennsylvania, May 30th, 1830, and was the eldest of a family of six, as follows: Jefferson, Savina, wife of J. S. Graham, Priscilla, wife of Willis Copeland, of Pennsylvania, John, Sarah, the wife of Martin Macky, of Pennsylvania, and Catharine, wife of Martin Witter of St. Louis, Mo., all of whom are deceased, except Mrs. Witter, Sarah having died only five days prior to the death of her brother, Jefferson. January 22nd, 1857 he united in marriage with Sarah A. Camp, who passed away September 23rd 1903. To this marriage were born 8 children, Isabelle, deceased, wife of R. H. Cochran, Francis A. of Salt Lake City, Utah, Mary P., deceased, wife of Walter M. Clark, also deceased, Bertha A., wife of M. P. DeWitt, Allie M., wife of Wm. Cochran Jr., Jno. E., of Sedalia, Mo., Ursula J., wife of M. P. Stone, of this city , and Carrie S. who died in infancy.  All of whom were with him and ministered to him during his last illness except Francis A. who was unable to be present. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Martin Witter, of St. Louis, Mo., who, on account of infirmities was unable to be present. Also 15 grand children and 20 great-grand children. In 1859 Mr. Swanger, with his wife, came west and located in Sullivan County where, for a number of years he followed his trade that of shoe-making.  About the close of the Civil war he bought a farm and engaged in agricultural pursuits until about 20 years ago when he sold his farm and moved to Milan where he has since resided. Early in life he united with the Methodist Episcopal church and at the time of his decease he had been actively identified with that church for more than 70 years, and during most of those years he filled some official position in his local church.  In church matters his counsel was sought and his admonitions heeded.  His life was an open boo, without a tarnished, page, his home an abiding place for the itinerant minister.   A firm believer in the Fatherhood of God, he recognized, taught and practiced the brotherhood of man.  His church claimed his first devotion, and second was his zeal for the fraternity with which he was identified.  In his every day life he lived the principles taught by the societies with which he was identified. In politics he was a Republican, having voted for every Republican candidate from the birth of the party ‘til 1912. He was honored by the people of this county by being elected to the office of County Treasurer, serving one term. He also served as post-master of Milan during the administration of Wm. McKinley. In civic affairs he was always to be found on the right side of every moral question. In social life he was genial, kind and considerate.  In his vocabulary were no harsh or unkind words.  His disposition was to subserve his will to others where no principal of right or wrong was involved. He reached the end of that perfect day, at peace with his God, and in the highest esteem of his fellowman. Funeral services were held at the M.E. Church of which he was a member, Sunday afternoon, conduced by Rev. Burris, District Supt. of the Maryville, Mo. district, assisted by Rev. Smuts, pastor of the local church, after which, the remains were taken in charge by Seaman Lodge, A. F. & A. M. and assisted by representatives of the fraternity from other lodges were accompanied to Oak Wood cemetery where they were ??? Masonic interment according to ritualistic form of the order. Thus has closed a long and useful life, the influence of which will be reflected in the lives of those who came in contact with the deceased.  May we not then say? “precious in the sigh of the Lord is the death of the Righteous.” A large number of out-of-town people were in attendance at the funeral.  We note the following: Hon. J.C. McKindley and wife and Charley Agee and wife of Unionville, Clyde Martin and wife of Macon City, Martin Witter of St. Louis, Mo, Mrs. Chas. E. Graham, of Kansas City, Mo., Geo. Mason, E. I. Olinger and Jno. C. Schnelle of Pollock, Mrs. E. A. Guiles, C. E. Johnson, Fred Guiles and John White of Greencastle, and many others who were in the Masonic procession whose names we fail to recall.

I have seen this picture many times. One of my aunts has it in a photo album. I thought I made a copy of it, but I can't find it at this point. The Cochran Boy on the back row is my grandfather -- Walter Raymond (Ray or Pappy to us). Ralph and Bruce were his brothers. They had another brother that died as an infant. In answer to another email about Isabelle and Alice -- Yes. They married brothers. Isabelle married Robert H Cochran (My great grandparents) and Allie married William A Cochran, Jr. Allie and William had 2 children -- Marion that I believe died young and Beulah Grace. Given that this appears to be the grandchildren of Jefferson and Sarah -- I would guess that the girl on the back next to my grandfather is Beulah Grace. She was 4 years younger than my grandfather -- it looks about right. That would make the most sense. My aunts live in Indiana. I will try to confirm with them at some point. I maybe skipped making a copy of the picture because the other names didn't mean anything to me at the time. Now I see how they all fit in. Maybe some info on my family would be appropriate. My grandparents had 10 children. My father is the 9th -- so relatively young in the family. I am the youngest child of my family. At 39, I am the third youngest grandchild. Not so young anymore, but still missed out on really knowing my Cochran grandparents -- much less distant cousins. After living in NW Missouri for most of their lives, my grandparents and most of their children moved to Valparaiso, IN in the 30's. My father was about 7 -- so that is where he grew up for the most part. My mother was from Nebraska. After living in both Indiana and Nebraska, they ended up living in SW Missouri -- where I was raised. Visiting my father's family meant going to Indiana every other year or so. With 20+ cousins -- that seemed like a lot of people to me. We never visited anyone in NW Missouri. I had heard names and seen pictures, but for the most part it was all foreign to me until about a year ago when I started trying to compile this information.
