Did you know ... that DeWitt is the 1,446th most popular last name (surname) in the United States with a frequency of 0.009%? It has been written by some people that the John DeWitt from who we descend came from Pennsylvania and Westmoreland County near Pittsburgh. This has been suggested because he met and married his wife Nancy Culbertson in that area of the country around 1790. However no one seems to have found any links between John DeWitt in that area of Pennsylvania with other DeWitts who could be his parents. For many of us John DeWitt descendants it has been tempting to try an connect to the famous Tjerck DeWitt family of the Kingston, NY area because so much is known about his family both before and after him. In my initial investigations I traced our family back to Thomas DeWitt in Virginia (now West Virginia) and could not find out any information as to the identity of his parents. So one spring back in 1981 my wife and I headed down to West Virginia because we saw in a road atlas Buffington's Island in the Ohio River near Ravenswood WV, and we figured there had to be an important story there since we knew that Thomas DeWitt had been married to Mary Buffington. Once we arrived we found the genealogical section of the Jackson County WV Public Library and we had a field day reading Jackson County history books and the census records. We even found the DeWitt Cemetery where Thomas and family members were buried. One day I noticed a nicely bound family genealogy entitled Rowley-King and Allied Families, by Homer King Rowley and Ruth McCammon Rowley which had recently been published in 1980. I walked by it and pulled it out because it was so handsomly bound and I wondered how one goes about publishing a genealogy. I was floored when I found a chapter on the DeWitts, the Culbertsons and the Buffingtons! I corresponded with Ruth soon afterward just after Homer's death. She sold me a copy of the genealogy and quite a bit of additional information. I imagine at the date of this writing in July 2003, that Ruth has passed on as well as she was born in 1908. I thank them for their efforts. Is it Johannes? Anyway... the Rowley-King DeWitt chapter suggested that we John DeWitt descendants are related to the Tjerck DeWitt family although they admitted that they could not specifically connect John with a specific Tjerck DeWitt descendant (pg. 96). However they suggested it might have been Johannes DeWitt. So as beginner... I was happy to believe this and we went home happy. I then went on a rampage to learn all I could about the Kingston, NY DeWitt line. A few years ago I started posting my family information on the internet for everyone else in the family to enjoy and I have been informed by several other people that the link back to Johannes is still not confirmed and that we John DeWitt descendants should remain disconnected.... ahhh lost in a sea of DeWitts!! Is it Ezekiel? NEW INFO: On March 19th, 2004 Jackilyn Turner wrote to me about her collection of information that suggested that OUR John DeWitt was the son of Ezekiel DeWitt who was the brother of Johannes. Cheryl Gallagher related to me on 4/12/04 that Cathy Green also believes we are descendants of Ezekiel DeWitt. So I have included that possibility in this website as well. Maybe we are making some progress? The Long Island Connection... Is it Abraham? In case you are wondering about other options, we John DeWitt descendants may actually be related to a line of DeWitts who arrived in Long Island, and then migrated west through New Jersey and into Pennsylvania. We might be descendants of Abraham DeWitt. If you are interested, take a look below or at his father, Paulus Dewitt. Is it Peter? Another DeWitt of the Long Island DeWitt line also named a son John about the same time period as our John was named... so we might be descendants of Peter DeWitt, a younger brother of Abraham and son of Paulus Dewitt. If you are interested, take a look at his father, Paulus Dewitt.

Kathryn DeWitt Gazaway suggested a few years ago that we John DeWitt descendants turn to the "Long Island" DeWitts starting with Jan Dewitt rather than the "Kingston, NY" DeWitts as a possibility for our history since no one can confirm a link to that clan. She noted that she had seen a few John Dewitts in her records. Unfortunately, Kathryn passed away on February 15, 2001. However, her work on the Long Island clan is now posted at The Genealogy Pages under their Surname Resource Center for DeWitts. Her work is found specifically at: The DeWitt Files of Katherine DeWitt Gazaway (with no ads) or also on the web at Gazaway (with ads). I had forgotten about her suggestion until recently (7/2003) when another descendant of John DeWitt contacted me (Greg Veneklasen) and suggested that we think about other DeWitt lines perhaps even from France rather than Holland. That comment refocused my thoughts back to this problem and made me quit working on school work (yeah, I'm a bio teacher) and focus on "more important issues". Anyway..... While exploring Kathryn's website I decided to see if I could find a John Dewitt from Pennsylvania who was born in the 1760 era. After viewing all the children of four generations starting from Jan Dewitt, I hit potential paydirt. Read downward to find a John Dewitt! (Commentary continues below the table.) |

Commentary (continued) As you have seen above, a son of Abraham Dewitt was named John. Most important, is that he was probably born in the 1760s and that he grew up in Pennsylvania!!! Unfortunately nothing else seems to be known about him other than his siblings who were: (Commentary continues below.) |

I
list John as 7c to denote that Kathryn listed him as the 3rd born
child. That would put his birthdate in the time between 1757
(William's birthyear) and 1763 (Paul's birthyear). Kathryn
listed
Sidney later but gave her a birthyear of 1760 so I moved her up to the
second child but she could be the third. Anyway.... John Dewitt
would
fit into our needed time slot of 1760-1765 as our family history gives our
John DeWitt's
birthyear as around 1760. (See John
DeWitt). How do we know this John DeWitt (son of Abraham) spent time in Pennsylvania? The father of this clan Abraham Dewitt (who was born in Rariton, Hunterdon Co, NJ) died in 1783 in Sunbury, Northumberland Co., PA. So we know that the parents of John Dewitt eventually migrated to PA from NJ. Kathryn's website also states that the siblings Paul, and Abraham were born in PA so that puts the family in PA by 1763. So that would suggest that their John Dewitt at least grew up in Pennsylvania,.... and that.... my cousins.... fits our needs! All we need is to confirm that he made his way across Pennsylvania to Westmoreland Co., by the late 1780s.... and lived next door to John Culbertson and thought Nancy was cute!! Of course this can certainly be categorized as wishful thinking too! But based on a brief investigation, the rough facts fit better than the wishful thinking about our descendancy from the Kingston DeWitts. So now the focus should be to find out more information about John Dewitt (son of Abraham). In a quick search at Ancestry.com, I found several links to Abraham, but NONE of them even listed John DeWitt as a son. (Sadness returns....) However the references I found were minimal and lacked any depth. Clearly Kathryn DeWitt Gazaway's work is the most detailed that I have found, and therefore I feel comfortable living with her information for now. John, oh John where is your history? .... actually, there may be another John to look at: John Dewitt, son of Peter Dewitt, son of Paulus. See discussion at the bottom. |

Notes: Most information from The De Witt Files of Katherine DeWitt Gazaway Details on John Dewitt
children is for the purpose of finding THE John DeWitt who could be our
ancestor. Abraham sons for Petrus and Paulus are shown
because there is some confusion about their wives. (see below.)
Some references on the web have connected M. Sutphin to Abraham (son of Paulus) while most connect her to Abraham (son of Petrus). Both Abrahams are first born sons and seem to both be born about 1725 in September. Additional information from the Van Tassel genealogy: Barent
and wife, Sarah, lived at Tarrytown, NY, being members of the Sleepy
Hollow Dutch Reformed Church, where we find records of the baptism of
several of their children. This church was also known as the
Philipsburgh Church, Philipsburgh being named for Frederick Philips,
who owned the land upon which the town was built.
Between 1709, the last appearance of his name in Tarrytown, and 1710, Bernard, (at this point in the paper M.E. Wood changes his name to Bernard), DeWitt removed with his family to Hunterdon County, New Jersey, settling on the Raritan River. This part of Hunterdon later became Somerset County. A Dutch Reformed Church was established here in 1710, Bernard DeWitt being elected, at its organization, the senior Deacon. It is not known when or where Bernard and his wife Sarah died, but it was probably at their old home near Somerville. No gravestones mark their last resting place, nor is there any will or administration account found to be on file. Also from the same genealogy: Van Tassel also known as Van Texel genealogy: Regarding Barent Dewitt and Sarah Van Tassel (Van Texel) They
lived in the Upper part of the Manor of Philipsburgh, called
by the Indians "Weekvaskeck" and by the Lord of the Manor
"Philipsburgh". Children were all baptized in the Old Dutch Church at
Sleepy Hollow. Shortly after the baptism of Sarah, the family must
have moved away as no further mention of the name appears in the
records of the Old Dutch Church at Sleepy Hollow, nor in the records
of Philipsburgh. From the WEB 7/18/98 information has that Barent
DeWITT died after 1723 in Rariton River, Somerset NJ.
Barent DeWITT was a tax collector of the District in which he resided in 1693 and 1694. In six of the receipts given him for money collected and paid into Chidley Broke, the County Treasurer, he is first called "Barnes White" then called "Barent Witt" and finally "Barent De Witt".
Notes: Most information from The De Witt Files of Katherine DeWitt Gazaway ** John Dewitt, son of Peter is also a candidate for our John DeWitt as he was likely to have been born about 1766-7. There is no other information as to the fate of John. * His father, Peter lived in the Port Jervis, NY area of Orange Co., NY which is across the Delaware River from Pennsylvania. In a Ancestry.com search I found a record of where Peter died which was Bef 1790 in Newton, Sussex Co. NJ. This information was found at: http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:2272480&id=I16459 in Toni Vietel's database Ref 2: Van Tassel genealogy: a) Paulus's christening date given which may or may not be his true birthdate b) Paulus' date and location of death are given: Abt 1772 in Bald Eagle Township, Northumberland Co., PA.) Ref 3: Regarding son William: Removed with his father to Bald Eagle Valley, Northumberland Co., PA. Served in the Revolution from Northumberland. Removed to Ridgeway Twp., Bradford Co., PA d. Notes: Information from The De Witt Files of Katherine DeWitt Gazaway and Van Tassel genealogy * Ref 1: Abraham's wife's last name: Last name for wife of Abraham found in one database in Ancestry.com search was Mary Sutphin, but she is connected to Abraham (son of Petrus not Paulus by most other refs including Kathryn Gazaway's database. (ref) Ref 2: Van Tassel genealogy: Regarding William: Removed with his father to Bald Eagle Valley, Northumberland Co., PA. Served in the Revolution from Northumberland. Removed to Ridgeway Twp., Bradford Co., PA d. June 10,1836 m. Sarah------b. 1762. William's children also listed here. Abraham also married an Eleanor who died Aft 1787 (ref).
Why John? As you have seen above, a son of Abraham Dewitt was named John. Most important, is that he was probably born in the 1760s and that he grew up in Pennsylvania!!! Unfortunately nothing else seems to be known about him other than his siblings names. (See children of Abraham above.) How do we know this John Dewitt (son of Abraham) spent time in Pennsylvania? The father of this clan, Abraham Dewitt (who was born in Rariton, Hunterdon Co, NJ) died in 1783 in Sunbury, Northumberland Co., PA. So we know that the parents of John Dewitt eventually migrated to PA from NJ. Kathryn Gazaway's website also states that the siblings Paul, and Abraham were born in PA so that puts the family in PA by 1763. That would suggest that their John Dewitt at least grew up in Pennsylvania,.... and that.... my cousins.... fits our needs! Her are the counties in 1755 in PA: All we need is to confirm that he made his way across Pennsylvania to Westmoreland Co., by the late 1780s.... and lived next door to John Culbertson and thought Nancy was cute!! As you can see from the maps above, the locations in western Pennsylvania may have been located in different counties depending upon the date. I have a letter sent to me by Cheryl Gallagher (4/12/04) written to Mrs. Wayne Downing dated 22 Jan 1986 from the Cumberland Co. Historical Society that states that no John Dewitt lived in that region from 1767 to 1794. Unfortunately, Cumberland Co. jumped into existence by 1755, then disappeared from 1780 until 1785, and then grew smaller by 1790. The letter DID relate that Abraham Dewitt and Paul Dewitt resided in Lackawanna Township in 1767 which was part of Cumberland Co. until 1789 when it became part of Mifflin Co. and later became part of Juniata Co. And for another John... consider.... John Dewitt, son of Peter Dewitt. John is also a candidate for our John DeWitt as he was likely to have been born about 1766-7. However there is no other information as to the fate of this John. John's father Peter remained in NJ all of his life apparently, so there is no suggestion that this John Dewitt ever moved to PA... but of course.... he could have just said goodbye to the family and headed west!! So we really seem to have one warm candidate, John Dewitt(1), son of Abraham Dewitt and one cool candidate, John Dewitt (2), son of Peter. But at least we have candidates named John who were born at the right time, and whose families had the "itch" to Go West!! If we try to go with the Kingston, NY Dewitts, we do not even have a candidate John.... just wishes. Boy... there sure are a LOT of Dewitts!!! However... as of April 2009, my DNA project has thrown water on this idea: MyDNA
