I have an autograph book, that belonged to Mary Elizabeth DeWitt.  When she was a teenager, she and her Father made a scouting trip to southern California in preparation for a move.  I was told that her Dad had tuberculosis and was heading to Santa Monica, CA in search of family connections and to arrange a place to live.  The autograph book is like a travel guide, because they stayed with people, many of them relatives all along the way, and the people each wrote a verse, in very flowery script and signed their names.

She (Mary Elizabeth DeWitt Say) had hair so long she could sit on it. Everyone called her "Mamie".   She was President of the Selma Improvement Club in 1925 and was Vice-President of the IOOF Orphans Home. She lived in Fresno and in Selma. California.  An article in Selma Irrigator gives the following personal information:  150 friends attended their 55th wedding anniversary celebration.  Her sister Mrs. J. G. Atkins and her brother, Oscar DeWitt, both of Los Angeles, and her brother Aldo DeWitt and his wife of Winton were also present.  Before her marriage, she was Miss Mamie DeWitt, daughter of M/M T. B. DeWitt.  She was married to Mr. Say at the home of her parents on Bethel Avenue.  Mr. Say has been a resident of Selma since 1874 and Mrs. Say came here with her parents from Missouri in 1884.  Mr. and Mrs. Say have made their home in Selma since their marriage with the exception of four years Mr. Say spent in Alaska and one year in San Diego.  The honored couple have one son, Lyle H. Say who makes his home near Selma.  Mr. Say was engaged in wheat farming until 1890? when he became a vineyardist.

The Autograph book mentioned above, places Mamie in Sublette, Mo in 1873, Carthage Mo 1879, St. Joseph's Academy, Chillicothe, Dec 1800, Kirksvile Normal School in Vandalia, Mo 1880, 1881. Los Angeles, 1883.  Also mentioned, without dates, are Wheeling, Mo, Calloway Co. and a G. W. Williams, Tulare CA.

?????????Question??????????

Could this Bertha be Mark Pinkney DeWitt's wife, Bertha Swanger?

According to the information from Buff and Joe Huntsman, this photo was taken before 1900.
At that time Bertha would have been 38.  If this photo was taken in 1890, she would be 28.
Anyone want to take a guess who she is?

Bertha Agnes Swanger's website can be viewed HERE.

Compare this photo of Bertha and Mark DeWitt to the photo above:

Anyone know who these folks are?  According to Buff, they are not California DeWitts so maybe they are Missouri DeWitts?

What do you think?  Is that Eula DeWitt kneeling with the white blouse and dark tie seen with the little girl looking up at her?
And perhaps the 8th person from the left in the back is Bertha Agnes Swanger?

More research about this photo can be found at WHO ARE THEY?
