The 1900 CENSUS states that he immigrated
to the
U.S. in 1851 and had lived 49 years
in the
U.S He also was listed as naturalized.

He also served in the Civil War:  See Pension
He is also listed in the 1890 Veterans Census (Census)

The 1910 CENSUS shows that he was married twice.

Really neatness!

In 1876, he owned about hundred seventy or so acres just north of Bynumville. (See map below.)

A map of Bynumville, Chariton Co., MO
in 1897 shows property of F.E., F.F., John
and S. Harmon and August Bartels, father of
Paulina Bartells. (ref)

By 1915, his property was owned by dauhter Tilda and John Minks and his Fred Harmon.
A 1915 map shows FE, FF, GS Harmon families and John Minks family where John Harmon lived earlier. The Bartels were no longer there however.
MAP: Caution. Very Large!

(FindAGrave)

The 1900 CENSUS states that she immigrated
to the U.S. in 1861 and had lived 39 years in the
U.S.  She also was listed as NOT naturalized.

Paulina's first name was confirmed in the 1880
CENSUS at the age of 23. The 1870 CENSUS
listed Margaret as the mother of children
down through Frank.  In 1910 she was called
Palena.

In 1900 CENSUS, she is listed as having had 4
children, so that confirms that Sherman G. was
son of Margaret. (or at least not Paulina's).
Also month /year of birth stated in this census.
This is in disagreement with the Church of the
Latter Day Saints record for Sherman which
suggests that he is the son of John and
Paulina. (REF)

In the 1920 Federal Census, she was 63 and
living with her daughter Tilda and son-in-law
John Minks in Bee Branch Township,
Chariton Co, MO

Her Bartles last name and date of death are confirmed
via Church of the Latter Day Saints (REF)

However, the Bartlett last name was found
in the Christian Haman Genealogy supplied
by Norma Harmon.
(REF)

In the 1880 census, the Bartlet name is
used by her parents.

Paulina's siblings were:

Arthur (1848-?) born Prussia
Minnie (1864-?) born IL
August (1872-?) born MO
William (1868-?) adopted born MO
(I can not find any of them after 1880.)

They immigrated to IL in July 1860
from Hamburg, Germany via NYC.

The spelling of her maiden name Bartells
comes from the wedding certificate of her
sister Augusta W Bartells Nachtigall in 1895.
Visit her father's website for more information.

Her father Philip Teter(s) was born in VA and her mother was born in MO.

A Teeter Cemetery exists in Chariton Co, so maybe her name was Teeter?

Several Teter families lived in the neighborhood in the 1920 and 1930 censuses.

In 1910, a U. S. Teters family lived near Frank and Anna.  Since his age was 33 he may be Anna's brother.

Notes:
This is a work in progress as of February 2010 so these are my notes as I do my research.
Near the bottom you will find a growing summary of each person in this family. (see FAMILY)

Note 1:
Information received on 9/21/03 from Norma Harmon, wife of Earl Cecil Harmon, son of Frederick Harmon, son of John Harman.

Note 2:

MY INFORMATION AND LOGIC(?)

+ I  found (7/03/02) a family genealogy written by Mary Frances Richardson,
(dau. of Mary Soffa Harmon Richardson)
which also shows that Fred, Alic, Frank and
Sherman were the children of a first wife and August, Louise, Matilda and

Mary were the children of Pauline Bartles. It also provides the spouses of all of these children.
It does NOT list Celia as a child so Celia may have died early in life.

* Information about Fred, Frank and Sherman was first found in the 1910 and 1920
Federal Census in Bee Branch Township
for Chariton Co, MO, (See Map) (ED 26).
They were also found in the 1900 census living with their families.  In 1870 and 1880 they

were living with John Harmon.  These two censuses are the most
helpful and are shown below.

** Information on Tilda Harmon was found in the 1920 Federal Census in
Bee Branch Township for Chariton Co, MO,
(See Map) (ED 26)
sheet number 10A with information taken on 21 Jan 1920.  On this listing,
living with the Minks was Tilda's mother Pauline Harmon,

who was born Abt 1857 in Germany and a widow in 1920.  I assume Tilda's
maiden name was Harmon because John Mink's
mother-in-law, Pauline Harmon
was living with them.  I have a separate website for her at: TILDA

*** In 1900 Bee Branch Township (See Map) Census, Sherman is listed as G. S.
instead of Sherman G. as in 1910.
I have a separate website for him at: SHERMAN

**** Birthdates with months were obtained from 1900 census in Bee Branch or Cockrell Townships.
Cockrell township was created about 1900 from Bee Branch township and
is the area below Bynumville in Bee Branch township in the 1876 map shown at:
1876 Map.

***** On the back of a photos of Mary Soffa Harman Richardson:

Born on June 30 in 1881 in Chariton County
Born near Wien, MO was sprinkle (babtized) in Prestern church at Wien, Mo
When a child near 16 years old her paerents moved to Bynumville, Mo
Was married Aug 16 1899 at Bynumville to W.P. Richardson

I have a separate website for her at: MARY

John Harman was found in the 1860 Federal Census in Bee Branch Township for Chariton Co, MO, (See Map) page 9  as shown below.  The interesting issue here are that Margaret B. was his wife.  It shows a child Maria who was 2 years old.  This is the only source I have ever seen listing this child or Margaret's middle initial.

1860 CENSUS
1860

Note 4:
****** John Harmon was found in the 1870 Federal Census in Bee Branch Township for Chariton Co, MO, (See Map) (ED 27) sheet 137
as shown below.  The interesting issues here are that Margaret was his wife.  It also shows that Frederick and Frank were his sons.
According to the 1900 census, a Fred Harmon was born April 1867.  The Frederick shown below was born in 1867.  In addition,
according to the 1900 census, a Frank Harmon was born July 1869.  The Frank shown below was born in 1869 because this census
was taken on 7 July 1870. I therefore suggest that this John Harmon is the father of our Frank and Fred shown above.

1870 CENSUS

Also....this 1870 census provides the names of two older daughters, but presents a different name for his wife. The surprise
here is that in the 1920 census, Tilda Minks's mother Pauline Harmon was living with Tilda and was 63 which puts her
birthday about 1857.  The Margaret shown above was born in 1831....... so....

IF ..... this John Harman is the father of Tilda and Mary Soffa Harmon whose mother was Pauline Harmon..... then Pauline
may be a second wife...... and...  Alice, Celia M, Frederick, Frank and Sherman (b 4/1872) were the children of John and Margaret.
If you look at the entire listing for Margaret in the 1870 census (ie. the columns to the right of what is shown above), it states
that she was one of the following: Deaf and dumb, blind, insane, idiotic, pauper or convict.  So perhaps her health was not
good in 1870 and she did not live much longer, although Sherman was born in 1872.....

Finally, this suggests then that Tilda, Mary, Louise and Gus were the children of Pauline and John and that is why they are
shown together in the photos and not in photos with Margaret, Alice, Celia, Frederick, Frank and Sherman who were older,
but step-siblings and not so close

NOTE: This entire conjecture has been confirmed by family documents that I found in July 2002 written by Mary Frances Richardson DeWitt,
daughter of Mary Sophia Harmon Richardson

In 1876...
John Harman lived just north of Bynumville, Chariton Co, MO according to this Plat Map.

(You can see that by 1897, John had moved to Bynumville owning the upper half of Mrs. Carman's property while his son Sherman still owned the lower 73 acres and son Frank (FF Harman) owned the B. Trummell 160 acres.  Sons Fred (FE Harman) and Frank also lived near town on the 1876 Wm Hurt property just east of Bynumville.  By 1915
of course John had died, but this map shows FE, FF, GS Harman families and the John Minks family where John Harman lived earlier.  By 1930, his son's families still flourished.  It is interesting to watch the spread of the family.)
1876 property

Note 5:
******
In the 1880 Census, John Harmon in Bee Branch Township for Chariton Co, MO, (See Map) (ED 164) sheet 41 shows up as married to the
23 yr old Pauline with several new children.... THIS record pulls everything together.... almost!

1880 CENSUS
The last 2 columns are Place of Birth of Person   Place of Birth of Father .... and not shown is Place of Birth of Mother (which is the same as for Father)

I can not tell which wife gave birth to Sherman although it may be Margaret since there was a 4-year "no children" time between
Sherman and Henry August.  Mary Sophia (my grandmother) was born in 1881 so she seems to be the youngest child and of course does
not show up in the 1880 census.  Unfortunately there is no 1890 census and by 1899, she was married to William Richardson.
Mary is listed however by the records at the Church of Later Day Saints (REF)

NOTE: This entire conjecture that Sherman is son of Margaret has been confirmed by family documents that I found in July 2002 written by
Mary Frances Richardson DeWitt, daughter of Mary Sophia Harmon Richardson.

Really neatness!  A map of Bynumville, Chariton Co., MO in 1897 shows property of F.E., F.F., John and S. Harman.
Also 1915 map shows FE, FF, GS Harman families and John Minks family where John Harman lived earlier.     MAP: Caution. Very Large!

Note 6:
1900 CENSUS

Census was found at Ancestry.com (pg 18/20);  taken 14 June 1900 in Cockrell Twnshp., Chariton Co, MO ED 34, page 9B)
Cockrell township was created about 1900 from Bee Branch township and is the area below Bynumville in Bee Branch township in the 1876
map shown at:
1876 Map.
As you can see in the 1900 census, 4 children for Pauline is confirmed, and the month and year of their births are given.
They were also married for 25 years (for John, I cut off the top of the 5) so they were married about 1875.
Matilda spelling (instead of Tillie or Tilda) is also shown for the first time.
They immigrated to US from Prussia in 1857 (John was 31) and in 1861 (Pauline was 18).

Note 7:
1910 CENSUS

Census found at Ancestry.com (pg 8/18);  taken 27 April 1910 in Cockrell Twnshp., Chariton Co, MO ED 33, page 4B)
Cockrell township was created about 1900 from Bee Branch township and is the area below Bynumville in Bee Branch township in the 1876
map shown at:
1876 Map.
As you can see in the 1910 census, no children remain at home. ... but once again John's age is suspicious... is he 89 or 84?

Note 8:
A 1915 map shows FE, FF, GS Harman families and John Minks family where John Harmon lived earlier.
MAP: Caution. Very Large!

1920 CENSUS

1920
Paulena was living with her daughter Tilda Minks and her family in 1920. In this document, it appears to state that Paulena
arrived in the U.S. in PA about 1860.

An Alice Sportsman (age 35.. born May 1865) with husband John H Sportsman (age 28-- born Feb 1872) was living in
Clark Township, Chariton Co, MO (district 33) on 13 Jun 1900.  They also  lived with two step daughters Margaret and
Rachel Olson.  Alice had had 4 children with two still living... which apparently were Margaret and Rachel Olson from
Alice's first marriage.  Both John and Alice were born in MO, Her parents born in Germany (father) and PA (mother).
His parents were born in KY (father) and PA (mother).

An Alice Sportsman with son Cecil was living in Bosworth, Ridge Township, Carrol Co, MO on 31 Jan 1920.
She was born in IL and was 55.  Cecil was born in IL and 18.  The parents were listed as being born in the United States!
Her ages in 1870 and 1920 are consistant with her birth about 1865.

** Mary's birthdate comes from family records. 1900 census states her birthdate as Jun 1880.  On 17 Jun 1880 she was not
listed in her parents census record, but if she was born on the 30th that is consistent.
RR She married William Pinkerton Richardson in 1899.

#  I checked the 1860 Census, but John, Margaret and family were not present in Bee Branch Township, Chariton County Mo.
RRAnother location needs to be found as they immigrated to the US in 1857 according to the 1910 census.

Really neatness!  A map of Bynumville, Chariton Co., MO in 1897 shows property of FE, FF, John and S. Harmon.
Also 1915 map shows FE, FF, GS Harmon families and John Minks family where John Harmon lived earlier.     MAP: Caution. Very Large!

##  I checked the 1900 & 1910 Censuses, but John, Pauline and family were not present in Bee Branch Township.
RR but I found them living to the south in Cockrell Township in 1900 and in 1910.

*&* Tillie Minks of Brunswick, Chariton Co., MO was the surviving sister of Mary S. Harmon Richardson who died 2 Aug 1965 according to Mary's obituary.

+ R Paulina's last name and date of death are listed via Church of the Latter Day Saints (REF)
RR John's date of death is listed via Church of the Latter Day Saints (REF)
RR Frank's date of death is listed via Church of the Latter Day Saints (REF)
RR Henry's date of death is listed via Church of the Latter Day Saints (REF)

Note 10:
    THE FAMILY OF JOHN HARMAN

  • John Harman stuff:
    • 1860
      • I checked the 1860 Census, but John, Margaret and family were not present in Bee Branch Township, Chariton County Mo. Another location needs to be found as they immigrated to the US in 1857 according to the 1910 census.
    • 1870
    • I know of his earliest existence from the 1870 Census (see above) 1870 Federal Census in Bee Branch Township for Chariton Co, MO, (ED 27) sheet 137.
    • This census states his first name as John without middle initial.
    • He was 45 years old in 1870 so I assume from this age he was born about 1825 and the census says in S-----?, Germany.
    • His parents were both born in Prussia.  No names have been found.
    • He was married to Margaret (age 39 --> b. 1831 in Saxony)
    • His children were daughters Alice, Celia M., and sons Frederick and Frank who were all born in Missouri so that means the John and Margaret were living in Missouri by 1864 when Alice was born. He immigrated to the US in 1857 accornding to the 1900 census.
    • 1880
    • He is listed in the 1880 Census (see above) for Bee Branch Township for Chariton Co, MO, (See Map) (ED 164) sheet 41
    • He was listed as 50 in this census
    • He had a new wife, Pauline (age 23 --> b. 1857 in Prussia)
    • His children were Celia, Fred, Frank and new children: son Sherman and August, and daughters Louisa and Tilie
    • 1890
      • A John Harmon is listed in the 1890 Special Veterans Census Chariton County, MO as: ""Harmon, John"  add-on to list".  I do not know what this listing refers to in terms of military service.
    • 1897
      • Really neatness!  A map of Bynumville, Chariton Co., MO in 1897 shows property of FE, FF, John and S. Harmon.
    • 1900
    • He is listed in the 1900 Census (see above) for Cockrell Twnshp., Chariton Co, MO ED 34, page 9B) (ancestry.com (pg 18/20);  taken 14 June 1900.  Cockrell township was created about 1900 from Bee Branch township and is the area below Bynumville in Bee Branch township in the 1876 map shown at: 1876 Map.
    • He was listed as John Harman and age 73 in this census and immigrated to US from Prussia in 1857
    • He also was listed as naturalized.
    • His wife, Paulina (age 43 --> b. July 1856 in Prussia) and immigrated to US from Prussia in 1861
    • His children were Celia, Fred, Frank and new children: son Sherman and August, and daughters Louisa and Tilie
    • 1910
    • He is listed in the 1910 Census (see above) for Cockrell Twnshp., Chariton Co, MO (ED 33, page 4B Date: 27 April 1910.  Note Cockrell Township only existed in 1900 and 1910. Cockrell township was created about 1900 from Bee Branch township and is the area below Bynumville in Bee Branch township in the 1876 map shown at: 1876 Map.
    • He was listed as 89 (probably  84?) in this census
    • He had been married to 53 yr old "Palena" for 35 years.
    • No children were living with them.
    • 1912
      • Death: 2 Jun 1912 (chronic nephritis)
in Cockrell Township, Chariton Co, MO

He was buried in Johnson Cemetery,
              Lagonda,
        Chariton Co. MO.
He was 86 yrs 10 months 25 days old.
               (ref: Death Certificate)
    • 1920
      • If his death date was 1912 (see below) , then he should not be found in 1920 in the census.  Pauline was found as a widow living with her daughter Tilda Minks in the 1920 census.
    • Other Notes
    • He is listed in the Church of Latter Day Saints database (REF) with
      • a birthdate of Abt 1839 in Prussia, Germany... which does not agree too well with the census records because the
      • 1870 census: calculated birthdate: 1825 from stated age of 45
      • 1880 census: calculated birthdate: 1830 from stated age of  50
      • 1900 census: stated birthdate: July 1826 and stated age of  73
      • 1910 census: calculated birthdate: 1826 from stated age of  84
      • a deathdate of  2 Jun 1912... therefore... approx 86 years old at death.
      • Death Certificate states his birthdate to be 7 Jul 1825 in Germany (ref: Death Certificate)

  • Margaret Prundon Harmon stuff:
    • 1860
      • I checked the 1860 Census, but John, Margaret and family were not present in Bee Branch Township, Chariton County Mo. Another location needs to be found as he immigrated to the US in 1857 according to the 1910 census.
    • 1870
      • I know of her existence from the 1870 Census (see above) which states her first name only.
      • She was 39 years old in 1870 so I assume she was born about 1831 and the census says in Saxony.
      • She was the daughter of parents from Prussia
      • If you look at the entire listing for Margaret in the 1870 census (ie. the columns to the right of what is shown above), it states that she was one of the following: Deaf and dumb, blind, insane, idiotic, pauper or convict.  So perhaps her health was not good in 1870 and she did not live much longer, although Sherman was born in 1872.
    • 1880
      • She did NOT show up in the 1880 census  (see above) so she may have died or married.
    • Other Notes
      • Her Date of Death is not known but After 1870 and probably after 1872 when Sherman was born.
      • Her Last name was obtained from Norma Harmon on 9/21/03 as was a death date of 1873
Return to top.

  • Pauline Bartles (Bartlett?) Harmon stuff:
    • 1870
      • After learning about the Bartles possible last name, I searched for a Bartles family living near the Harmons in Chariton Co, MO
      • Pauline was living with her parents August and Minnie Bartles  in Keytesville, Bee Branch Township, in Chariton Co. along with brother Arthur and sister Minnie on 8 Jul 1870.  From her age of 13, it assumed she was born about 1857 in Prussia.
      • Because youngest daughter Minnie was born in Illinois about 1864, the Bartles may have moved there first when they arrived from Prussia about 1861.
      • They lived fairly close to John Harmon (who was listed about 4 pages earlier in the census book.)
1870
    • 1880
      • I know of Pauline's existence first from the 1880 census which states her first name only but as Mrs. John Harmon.
      • She was 23 years old in 1880 so I assume she was born about 1857 and the census says in Prussia.
      • She immigrated to US from Prussia in 1861
      • She was the daughter of parents from Prussia
      • She also was listed as NOT naturalized.
    • 1880 Bartlet parents lived again in Bee Branch Township, Chariton Co, MO on 11 Jun 1880.
      • This is the first use of the Bartlet last name.  Living with August is his wife Minnie, daughter Minnie, son August (b Abt 1872) and adopted son William (born 1868.
1880
    • 1900: Pauline Harmon
      • She was the mother/wife listed in the 1900 census and she was born in July 1856
    • 1910
      • She was the 53 yr old wife listed as "Palena" in the 1910 census

    • 1920
      • I found her again listed as the widow Pauline Harmon (age 63) in the 1920 Census living with her daughter Tilde Harmon Minks, with family and husband John P. Minks in Bee Branch Township  in Chariton Co, MO. (ED 26, Sheet 10A) Date: 21 Jan 1920
    • Other Notes
      • I have a Ligandi, MO reference for John and Paulina.  But I have never found ANY other reference to Ligandi at all.... however if you look at Bee Brank Township in Charition, Co., Mo.... there is a town called Lagonda.... which is just east of Wien and northeast of Bynumville, which are towns mentioned in various references about these Harmons.  Lagonda is the location for Johnson Cemetery where they are buried.
      • She is listed in the Church of Latter Day Saints database (REF
        • as the mother of  Alice, Frederick, Frank, Sherman, Henry August, Louisa, unknown daughter, and Mary
        • with a birthdate of Abt. 1843 in Prussia, Germany... which does not agree too well with the census records because the
          • 1880 census: calculated birthdate: 1857 from stated age of  23

          • 1920 census: calculated birthdate: 1857 from stated age of  63
        • with a deathdate of 1 Apr 1928.
        • Death certificate. agrees with death in Chariton Co.
(She was listed as Paulina Harman.)
             burial: ????
      • Her alternate Last name of Bartlett was obtained from Norma Harmon on 9/21/03.

  • Alice Josephine Harman stuff:
    • 1870
      • I know of her existence from the 1870 Census (see above) which states her first name.
        • She was 6 years old in 1870 so I assume she was born about 1864 and the census says in Missouri.
        • She was the daughter of Margaret and John Harman
    • 1880
      • She did NOT show up in the 1880 census  (see above) so ... was she was married?
      • No ... not married... other resources state that she married a man named Olson about 1884 because in the 1930 census (see below) it states that she was 18 when she first married.
        • and had two 4 children (2 died) and 2 were Margarte M and Rachel E (see 1900 census below)

Note: Mary Harmon Richardson had 12 children and her last Fern Helen was born in 1922.  If the child she is carrying was Fern and was about 3 years old, then the date of this photo would be about 1925.  The child also looks like her second youngest, Mary Frances who was born in 1919, so then the date of this photo might be 1922.
