MARY'S INFO

* Alternate middlenames:(Sophie?) (Soffie) (Sofa)
(Sophia was in her obit.) but in two handwritten notes from Mary, she spelled it Soffa or Sofa.
Her tombstone states: "Sophia".

The only evidence that I have that Mary used Harmon as her maiden last name instead of her father's last name Harman is found on a handwritten note (see below) in which she used Harmon.

Really neatness!
A map of Bynumville, Chariton Co., MO in 1897 shows property of FE, FF, John and S. Harmon.  Mary would have been living with her parents in the land labelled John Harmon near Bynumville.

b. 30 Jun 1881 near Wien, Chariton Co., MO (according to Mary's note) but Jun 1880 in 1900 Census.  On 17 Jun 1880 she was not listed in her parents census record, but if she was born on the 30th that is consistent with either 1880 or 1881.

More Mary Info...

The first on-paper documentation of Mary that I have found is after she is married, since the 1890 census is not available. Nineteen year old Mary and her family were found in the in the 1900 Census as the William P. Richardsons living in Clark Township in Chariton Co., MO. The number of years married and number of children was zero!!! It also states that Mary was born in June 1880 and William in September 1867. Both dates are in debate based on other references. (June 1881 and September 1866)

It appears that they moved to Linn Co., by 1902 because Russell, Mildred and Ruby were born there in the 1902-1905 time period. Or maybe they just visited the Marceline hospital for those births which is just north of the Chariton County area they had been living in. Or maybe they moved back to Westville by 1907 when Herbert was born.

They lived in Nebraska by 1909 because Norman and Wilford were supposedly born near Alexandria, Thayer Co., Nebraska. I have found them in the 1910 census there. William's obituary also says that he lived for four years in Nebraska.   The 1930 census also states that Norman was born in Nebraska but Wilfred had left home.

By 1913 they had moved back to the Westville area in Chariton Co, because Marvin was born there. In the 1920 Census for Charition Co, Clark Township, their last name was written as Richeson.  W. P. is listed as 52 and Mary is listed as 38. He is listed as born in Indiana with parents born in Indiana and Kentucky. She is listed as born in Missouri with parents born in Germany.

Again in the 1930 census, her family was listed as the Richesons.  She is listed as Mary S. and 48. She is listed as born in Missouri with parents born in Germany.  She was 18 when she married William.

As far as I know, they lived in Chariton Co., after they moved back from Nebraska.  William died in 1946 and Mary in 1965. They are both buried in Linn Co. but William P. is buried in Marceline and Mary is buried in Meadville near her son Herbert Richardson.

Last known location or residence was 1920 when he was working on a farm in Iowa.

No one in the family apparently heard from him again.

According to a witness at WP Richardson's funeral, Harlan was not present but he was listed as a surviving son.

A Harmon Richardson died in Chariton Co, MO in Feb 1952. (Death Certificate)

According to the D.C. (see link above) he was born in 15 May 1874 and his wife was Effie (b 1879) and daughter was Lucille (b 1914).  He lived in Randolph Co. MO, in 1930
Also registered for draft in 1918 when he was 44 in Randolph Co, MO

He is NOT our Harmon, because his father was Buse Harmon Richardson and his mother was Martha Jane Conrad.

See note below.

Basically, no one knows what happened to Harlan.

However, it is a bit confusing why he was listed as a surviving brother in Herbert's obit.

Notes:
  • Birthdates:  Just when I was most frustrated, I started cleaning my office, and what do I find, written by Mary Frances Richardson DeWitt? A complete listing of all her siblings with their birthdates and birthplaces!!!! Wow!!! Thanks mom!
  • Harlan Harmon Richardson
    • Thanks to mom's list, the mystery of Harmon and Harlan is solved.... as it was only Harlan Harmon Richardson who was the first born son.  His name probably came from Mary Soffa's maiden name Harmon and maybe William Pinkerton's sister's married name of Harlan?
    • * WP Richardson's obit says Harlen Richardson is a son and that one other son had preceeded him in death (which is now known to be Russell Howard). Another obit calls Harlan, "Harley" and said he lived in Marceline in 1946!. Herbert's obit says Harlan H. (Read Herbert's Obits: OBIT)
    • Harlan can be seen living with his family in Alexandria, Thayer Co., Nebraska in the 1910 census for the family
    • ** Family history says that he disappeared as a late teenager and was never heard from again.... but I found a Harlan H. Richardson, age 18, in the 1920 Census (shown below), living as a hired hand with M. Morgan, in Madison Township in Fremont Co, IA (ED 71, page 8A) on 23 Apr 1920. At the time of the census recording, Harlan would be 19 not 18.... so is this really our Harlan?... probably.  I can find no other Harlan H Richardson in the US in 1920.
    • How did I find this Harlan?  Ancestry.com has indexed the entire US 1920 census, so all you gotta do is type in the name.  Wow!!
    • Unfortunately... I can not find him after 1920.

    • I assume Harlan died before 1965 because Mary S. Richardson's obit states three sons had preceeded her in death. I assume the sons are Russell, Herbert and ?Harlan?.  Family rumors state that he died of a heart attack.
    • Oddly, a Harold Richardson with the same birthdate of 12 Jan 1901 died in the Bronx,  NYC in Feb 1979 via SSDI
    • I have not been able to find him after 1920, other than the mention that he was alive in the above mentioned obituaries
  • Russell Howard Richardson
    • He was the only child who did not survive to enjoy at least 40+ years in adult life. I wonder why he did not make it?  At least we now know who the son was that is mentioned in his parent's obituaries.
  • Mildred Ruth Richardson
    • Mary Frances' listing gives her birthday as 30 Dec 1903 which is consistent with the 1920 census. I found her middle name on this list as well.
    • More on Mildred can be seen below.
    • A great photo of Mildred, Ruby, Bertha, Mary Frances, and Mary Soffa Richardson with several husbands and children in the early 1940s can be see at CLAN. Norman is there too!
    • Another great photo of Mary Frances, Mildred, Ruby, Norman, Wilford and Mary Soffa Richardson with several in-laws IN COLOR and in 1963: MEADVILLE
  • Ruby Edith Richardson
    • Mary Frances' listing gives her birthday as 18 Jan 1905 which is consistent with the 1920 census. I found her middle name on this list as well.
  • Herbert Chester Richardson
    • Herbert lived in Cleveland before he joined the Army in 1942.  He married Helen but I do not know when they divorced or if she died.
    • I had no idea that Herbert had ever been maried, but I do not know when he and Helen Voisiet (Voisinet?) were divorced or if she died. What is really strange is that in the 1930 census Helen A Voisiet is living as a boarder in the home of Anna Harmon in Cleveland Ohio!  This MUST be significant.  Anna is age 62ish as is widowed.  In 1920 she is also widowed. I can not find her in 1910.  I do not know who she is, but this would explain perhaps why Herbert went to Cleveland because a Harmon relative lived there.
Voisiet
1930 Census: Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OH 2 Apr 1930
Anna Harmon, age 64 (because 52 in 1920 census), her children, Joe L, Agnes M, Albert G., John T, and boarder Helen A Voisiet.  (Note: In 1910, her husband was living with her and his name was Frank Harmon (b. 1865 in PA)).  I do not know if he is related to our Harmon clan.)
    • Mary Frances' listing gives his birthday as 22 Jul 1907 which is consistent with the 1920 census. I found his middle name on this list as well.
    • Read Herbert's Obits: OBIT
    • A great photo of Herbert, Wilfred and Marvin at Marvin's gas station can be seen at GAS.
    • A nifty photo of Herbert on his horse can be seen at HORSE
  • Wilford Ronald Richardson
    • Wilford was not present in the 1930 census.  Was he away that day or had he left home already?  In the 1920 census, it looks like Wilford was 10 which means he was born in 1910.  Mary Frances' listing gives his birthday as 26 Aug 1909 which is consistent with the 1920 census. I found his middle name on this list as well.
    • A great photo of Herbert, Wilford and Marvin at Marvin's gas station can be seen at GAS.
    • Another great photo of Mary Frances, Mildred, Ruby, Norman, Wilford and Mary Soffa Richardson with several in-laws IN COLOR and in 1963: MEADVILLE
    • I had been calling him Wilfred, but have changed it to Wilford as he is also called Wilford in his father's OBIT
  • Marvin Virgil Richardson
    • Marvin's middle name was Virgil, his wife's name is Fern Gillespie and his birthday was 12 Apr 1913. All was confirmed by his oldest son.
    • A great photo of Herbert, Wilfred and Marvin at Marvin's gas station can be seen at GAS.
  • Norman Raymond Richardson
    • A great photo of Mildred, Ruby, Bertha, Mary Frances, and Mary Soffa Richardson with several husbands and children in the early 1940s can be see at CLAN. Norman is there too!
    • Another great photo of Mary Frances, Mildred, Ruby, Norman, Wilford and Mary Soffa Richardson with several in-laws IN COLOR and in 1963: MEADVILLE
  • John Truman Richardson
    • A great photo of John with his car in 1942 can be seen at CAR.
  • Bertha Elizabeth Richardson
    • Bertha E is listed as 15 in the 1930 census (7 Apr 1930). However the Social Security Records (SSDI state that she was born 4 Sep 1917. This corresponds well with the 1920 census which says that she was 3 on 29 Jan 1920. So on 7 Apr 1930, she should have been listed as 13. This date is consistent with Mary Frances' listing of the siblings. I found her middle name on this list as well.
    • A great photo of Mildred, Ruby, Bertha, Mary Frances, and Mary Soffa Richardson with several husbands and children in the early 1940s can be see at CLAN. Norman is there too!

      • I found this record after the 1920 and 1930 census records.  Here we confirm William's birthday month as September and the year 1867.
      • Since they were married ion 16 Aug 1899, this record shows that they have not been married even a year and no children.... what a life they have coming!!!
      • Mary is only 19 but will be 20 within 11 days.  This birth date does not agree with family records which state that her birthday was 30 Jun 1881.  I wonder which year is correct? 1880 or 1881?  Let's see... On June 19, 1900 she was 19.  If she was born on 30 Jun 1881, she should be 18 going on 19. If she was born in 1880, she would be almost 20...  So all seems correct in 1900... but was someone lying about her age?... or are the family records in error?  Guess we need to search for birth records... sigh.... or maybe her words in the 1940s or 50s should suffice?... • I found this census record by searching at Ancestry.com for any W. P. in Missouri in the searchable 1920 Census and discovered that our ancestor was listed as Richeson rather than Richardson.
        • *RIf Marvin was born on 13 Apr 1913, on Jan 20 1929 which is the date of the 1920 census he would be 6.
        • This 1920 census states that all of these children were born in Missouri, yet as you can see in 1930, Norman was born in Nebraska.

      • This is much more readable... yeah!!!.....
      • William P was 31 when he married 18 year old Mary!!
      • The oldest son at home in 1930 is Norman F (age 19).. so was he born in  1911? Would he have been around 9 in 1920.
        • Norman's parent's birthplace looks odd:  Father: Missouri  and Mother: Indiana???????  I have never heard that he was adopted, so I guess this is just an error.

NH = not at home
*
Mildred was married to Fay Haley in 1922. Her age was 18.  The 1930 census says she is 25, but she is 27. More on Mildred can be seen below.
**
I found a Harlan H. Richardson living in Iowa at age 18 in the 1920 census. I have found the 1910 census showing Harlan living in Alexandria, NE.
***
The only information I have about Russell is from a listing written by Mary Frances.
****
The information I have about John's middle name is from a listing written by my Mary Frances.  She also gave his birthdate as 7 Mar 1915 which would place him older than Bertha which is not consistent with the 1930 census. I had always grown up hearing that Bertha, Mary and Fern were the three youngest children.

   (1879-1971)
(dau. of John and Paulina Harman)
   (wife of John P. Minks)

- Mary Harmon Richardson
   and son ?
   (1881-1965)
(dau. of John and Paulina Harman)
   (wife of William P. Richardson)

- unknown
Front row:
Left to right:
- maybe Alice Harman Sportsman
   (1865-1951)
(dau. of John and Margaret Harman)
   (wife of John Henry Sportsman)
- Paulina Bartles Harman
   (1856-1928)
  (second wife of John Harman)
- maybe Louisa Harmon Sinn
(dau. of John and Paulina Harman)
   (wife of George Sinn)

Location: probably Chariton Co, MO

Date: Before 1928 when Paulina died.
Note: Mary Harmon Richardson had 12 children and her last Fern Helen was born in 1922.  If the child she is carrying was Fern and was about 3 years old, then the date of this photo would be about 1925.  The child also looks like her second youngest, Mary Frances who was born in 1919, so then the date of this photo might be 1922.

  • Mildred Richardson Haley
    • 1930 Marceline Township, Linn Co., Mo (ED 24, pg 8A  (ancestry.com 16/22)
    • Date: 11 Apr 1930
    • Fay Haley was born in Missouri on 28 Sep 1888 and died 27 Apr 1972 in Marceline, MO.
      • His father was born in Canada but his mother was born in Missouri
      • Who were Fay's parents?  (See Haley Family)

    • Fay and Mildred were married in 1922 according to Mary Frances' listing on 20th June.  She and Mildred were quite close so I believe her date to be accurate.

    • Their son William Fay Haley Jr was born in 1927.  Photos of the Haleys with Mary Richardson can be seem above.
My middle name came from Fay Haley.
Another photo of Mildred and Fay with Mary (in color!) can be seen at: 1963
