Browning FACTS (ref)

Elevation: 760 feet (it is in Sullivan and Linn Counties)

Browning lies in both Sullivan and Linn Counties, on the C. B. & K. C. R. R., twelve miles south of Milan. The northern part of the town lies in the southwest quarter of Sec. 32, Twp. 61, R. 20. The original plat was surveyed by C. G. Biffer, surveyor of Linn County in October and November, 1872. The plat contained five blocks, the number of lots being fifty-five ...

The town was named after Mrs. Browning of Burlington, Iowa, by Justin Clark, who was a member of the Burlington and Southwestern Railroad Company. Mrs. Browning was the wife of a brother of Hon. O. H. Browning ...

The first house built was by John Gable, as a residence for B. F. Northcutt, but it was first occupied as a dwelling by John Edwards, who lived in it until his death, in 1873. John Edwards kept the first store in the town. A blacksmith shop was started in 1873 by William Armstrong and a drug store in 1874 by Dr. Louis Patterson. Among the first postmasters was George Milburn.

Browning was incorporated February 8, 1878. (--Goodspeed, pp. 195, 196, 197, 198.)

It is located on Highway 5 at the Linn Co. line. (--Map of Mo., 1974, Rand McNally.)

I am trying to locate the Knifong Cemetery!

Thanks to Steven L. Pfeiffer, the location of the cemetery is shown below.

I would like to create a webpage with as much info about the Cemetery as possible without stepping
on anyone's toes.

Apparently, Stephen has decided to get out of the geneology CD business, as his website has been taken down.
He was advertising CDs of Sullivan County cemeteries.
He informed me that his professional business needs were consuming his energy now.

Anyway, he was kind enough to show me where the cemetery is located.
Does anyone have any information or photos?

Richard Smith wrote to me (on 2/21/00) about the Knifong homesteads:

Martin Jesse Knifong, Jr., Geo. Washington Knifong's grandfather's homestead was two miles East of Browning. Adjacent to it was 40 acres owned by my GG grandfather Joseph W. Knifong and 80 acres owned by George's father John Jesse Knifong. Another son of Martin Jesse Knifong's Caleb had 160 acres about four miles Northeast of Browning.

The Knifong Cemetery, which is still in use was established on the property when Martin Jesse Knifong died in 1841. He was the first to be buried there. The remains of an old church was standing when I visited the site in 1994. The Church was known as the Knifong Grove Church.

For more information on all of these Knifongs, visit: Knifong-DeWitt  Genealogy

Below is a photo he took showing the entrance to the Knifong Cemetery.

This is the beautiful entrance to the Knifong Cemetery. This is a very pretty and well maintained private cemetery. Located abt. 2.5 miles East of Browning on the County line road. Then North just under a mile to the end of the road at Knifong Grove, the cemetery and what remains of the old Knifong Grove Church. (Note: the church was falling down in 1994 and may have been removed by now.)
