John McCullough was born 22 June 1809 in Pennsylvania or Ohio. He died 7 Oct 1863, at Rolla, Mo., of typhoid fever while serving as major of the 23rd Regiment, Missouri Volunteer Infantry during Civil War. He is buried in McCullough Family Cemetery near Cora, Mo. (Near Reger, Sullivan Co, MO) John's parents are unknown (see below). John worked as carpenter early in his life before becoming a farmer. He and his family migrated to Boonville, Cooper County, Mo. in 1836, but apparently did not come directly from Pennsylvania as a son (Sharon W.) was born in New Orleans in 1833. The family moved from Boonville to Sullivan County in 1840, making him one of county's early settlers. He is identified in late 19th century histories of Sullivan County as the architect of the first three bridges built in county in 1849 and 1850. Along with Joel DeWitt and others, he was a leader in seeing that Sullivan County sent a pro-Union delegation to the Missouri state convention on secession, although many had initially thought the county was sympathetic to the South. John supposedly was later targeted for assassination along with some others because they were so outspoken and effective in their pro-Union views. The plot was apparently abandoned when pro-Union people caught wind of it and threatened reprisals. John enlisted in Company A 23rd Regiment Missouri Volunteer Infantry in the of spring 1861 and was elected and commissioned major (third highest rank). He was taken prisoner in the Hornet's Nest at the battle of Shiloh (6-7 April 1862) and retained at Chattanooga, Tenn., and Macon, Ga. for six months. After his exchange for Confederate prisoners held by Union forces, he commanded the 23rd Regiment in Missouri. He was elected state senator in the fall of 1862 and held post at death (it was apparently not unusual for legislators to also be in military). For information about the 23rd Regiment click on the sign at the right. More about them by Karl Seitz (Ref) |
Elizabeth Bell was born in 19 Aug 1810, most likely in Pittsburgh, Penn., but perhaps in Washington County, PA. Her parents were Thomas Bell (1775-1825) and Mary McAllister (1786-1834). She died 30 April 1886 in Sullivan County, Mo., and is buried in McCullough Family Cemetery near Cora, Mo. Elizabeth and John were married 7 July 1831 at Hiland Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh by Rev. Robert Patterson. From Seitz Genealogy |

| John
McCULLOUGH's life is well documented after the mid 1830s. My problem is
in getting back another generation. The best leads relate to his wife,
Elizabeth M. BELL, whose ancestory has been discovered through some
joint research by myself and some cousins. But first something about
John. John was born in either Pennsylvania or Ohio 22 June 1809. The conflict in location is in successive census records, although if we are correct in our theory about his parents, the family lived close to the Pennsylvania- Ohio state line. He married Elizabeth M. BELL 17 July 1831, in Pittsburgh, Penn., according to family records. Shortly thereafter they apparently moved to New Orleans where their oldest son, Sharon W., was born 16 Aug. 1833. In 1836, the family moved to Boonesville, Mo. and then in 1840 to Sullivan County, Mo., where John was among the early settlers. John was a carpenter and a farmer. He is credited with designing and building some of the early bridges in Sullivan County. John was also active in political life. He and his friends, including Joel DeWITT, father-in-law to a few of John's children, were instrumental in sending a pro-union delegation to the state convention that was called to have Missouri join the Confederacy. John was a major in the 23rd Missouri Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War and second in command of the unit at the Battle of Shiloh. The 23rd was an unassigned unit that was attached to Gen. Prentiss when it arrived during the first day of the battle and was among the units that held the Hornet's Nest until late in the day, preventing a Confederate victory. After surrendering with his unit, John was a POW in Macon, Ga., for six months before being exchanged. He returned to the 23rd and was serving as commanding officer when he died of disease at Rolla. Mo. 7 Oct. 1863. At the time he was also a state senator. There is reason to believe that John is a son of Charles McCULLEY, who was born in Ulster, Ireland. and came to Pennsylvania with his parents, Francis McCulley and Jane Bingham. However, my McCullough cousins and myself have yet to find solid proof. Charles and his parents originally settled in Chester County, Penn., but later moved to Mercer County, Penn. Charles' land actually touched the state line with Ohio. Charles moved to Ross County, Ohio, around 1818 and died there in 1821. He does not appear to have left a will. We can account for most of Charle's children, including a daughter, Marie, who married John Proudfoot, and some sons for whom his brother-in-law, Dr. France J. LeMoyne of Washington County, Penn., became guardian. But no document has been found saying Charles had a son named John. The change from McCulley to McCullough is not remarkable -- as best I can tell the pronunciation of the two names was once much closer than it is now. We know from family tradition that long predates our discovery of Charles McCulley that a niece named Elizabeth PROUDFIT once visited the McCulloughs in Missouri. Until we discovered Charles McCulley, it had been assumed she was a niece of John's wife, Elizabeth BELL, now we believe she was a niece of John. As for Elizabeth BELL, it has been discovered in "The Bell Family of Mifflin County, Pennsylvania," a 1941 book written by Raymond Martin Bell, that Elizabeth BELL's parents are Thomas BELL (1775-1825) and Mary McALLISTER (1786-1834). The Bell line can be traced back to her great-grandfather, William BELL, who apparently came to this country from Northern Ireland before 1738. Unfortunately, the now deceased Raymond M. Bell told a cousin and fellow researcher that he had not done detailed research on our branch of the Bell line, much less John McCullough. What we do know of Elizabeth's family are her siblings names and further details about some of them. She was the second of eight children.

During the early part of the Civil war he ran a heard of mules into Iowa for safe keeping from the invasion ofthe Confederate army, until the government should need them (mules). He had 560 acres of good land, well stocked and improved. A man of integrity and high character, a public spirited citizen, and liberal contributor to all educational and laudable enterprises. Was reared by a Republican father and adhered to that party. Sharon remained a bachelor in the home with the Mother until her death April 30, 1886. was born 30 Jan. 1839 in Boonville, Cooper County, Mo. He died 13 May
1906 in Sullivan County, Mo., and is buried Oakwood (aka Milan Cemetery)
in Milan, Sullivan County, Mo. His parents were John and Elizabeth (Bell) McCullough. In the Civil War, he was a member of the 66th Regiment Missouri Militia, serving as first lieutenant (commissioned 30 Aug. 1862) of Company I and afterward as captain of Company B. At least one source says he was present but not a participant in the battle of Shiloh, at which his father was taken prisoner, but I suspect this may have been his brother Webster. In 1876, Warren was one of three men who formed private bank at Milan, which did business until 1884 when it became First National Bank. He was involved in various businesses, most notably owner of hardware store. A Republican, he was elected Sullivan County sheriff in 1864 and re-elected 1866, serving a total of four years. He later served one-year terms as alderman from Milan's Second Ward in 1882, 1884 and 1886 and as city clerk in 1887. |

Josephine married Warren McCullough on 2 July 1865, in Milan and they had nine children. In 1887, she served as head of committee on scientific instructions in the schools for the Women's Christian Temperance Union, an organization in which she was long active. Josephine and Warren also frequently took in and raised children other than their own. Other photos: photo 1 and photo 2 Another photo of Margaret in a big group of ladies. have been born about 1863 and her father was born in
Va while her mother was born in MO.]---- She COULD be Luella
Eddyth "Ella" Dewitt (born 1864) who is the daughter
of Thomas
Buffington DeWitt (born in VA) and Elizabeth McCullough (born in
MO) who is Joseph
Culbertson's father's
(Joel DeWitt) brother. so Thomas
would be Joseph's uncle.. so she would be a great niece.?? whew!]

1910 Census: Antioch
City, 8th-Twp, Contra Costa, California: (30 Apr 1910)
Joseph
Culbertson DeWitt and wife
Elizabeth
(McCullough) , with daughter Eunice
and son Ernest.
(It is not clear who the second DeWitt family is. Is it Dr. J. Wallace
DeWitt? He was born in WV in 1871.
However, Dr. J. Wallace is mentioned in Thomas Bryon DeWitt's obituary and is listed
as a nephew... see above)
Actually... J. Wallace Dewitt, may be John W. Dewitt, son of
Joseph. That would make sense. He would also
be a nephew of
Thomas Bryon DeWitt.
