Dr. "By" DeWitt as he was known here, was the son of the late Dr. Joel DeWitt and Mrs. Margaret A. DeWitt. He was born is Sullivan County Aug 25, 1848 on the old home place near Reger, MO, and was reared to manhood in this county.
Milan Republican 31 Mar 1904 (Thomas Byron DeWitt again)
Dr. Byron DeWitt died of apoplexy
Dr. J. Wallace of Antioch...hurried to the bedside of his uncle...
When Dr. DeWitt came out from the East a number of years ago he first located in Antioch practiced medicine and was a half owner in the largest drug store in town. It was here that he became acquainted with and married his wife, who was then Miss Sapie Rapp... One son, Hugh Byron DeWitt, aged ten years, is the result of this union.
NOTE: Antioch is the city that Dr. J. Wallace DeWitt lived in, in California, near Oakland, in1910, next door to Joseph C. Dewitt. Dr. J. Wallace appears to be John W. DeWitt, son of Joseph C. DeWitt. The last paragraph above seems to refer to J. Wallace DeWitt, because the 1910 census shows that his wife was born in CA, although Nettie has been married before. It is not clear if Hugh Byron is the son of Thomas Byron DeWitt, or J(ohn) W(allace) DeWitt.
Thanks to Cherly Gallagher for the transcriptions.
In 1900, a John C. Dewitt (age 33) born Jan 1867 lived in Bowman Township, Sullivan Co, MO with wife Anna S. (age 34) born May 1866. (SEE CENSUS BELOW) They had 3 children living with them: Meryl??? a son aged 5 born Jan 1895, Richard, a son aged 3 born Jul 1896, and Dale, a son aged 1 born oct 1898. I do not know who this John is. His father was born in IN and his mother was born in OH. Anna was born in IL, and her father was born MO and her mother was born in IN.
Nearby is the widowed, Martha Dewitt, age 41 born Jul 1858, living with son-in-law Richard M????f??, with his wife Anna (Marth's daughter) age 24 born Jan 1876. Martha's parents were both born in VA. Since Dewitt would not be her maiden name, we need to find a husband for her ... a Dewitt male born around 1850-1860 in IN, who died before 1900 and who had a wife named Martha, born in MO, and a daughter Anna, born in 1876 in MO. The John C. Dewitt above may be Martha's brother, and not her son, since she is 8 years older than him. No.. that doesn't work because John's father was born in IN and Martha's father was born in VA.
I give up.... Sigh. I have never heard of any unrelated Dewitts in Sullivan County.
In 1910.... a John DeWitt, age 43, born in MO, with father born in IN and mother born in VA (instead of OH), is still a merchant, but is living alone in Bowman Township, Sullivan Co, MO and NOT widowed....not very helpful.
In 1920... I can not find him.
Sigh again...
Ahhhhhhhhh.. ancestry.com to the rescue. From the Northeast Missouri genealogy project by Michele Cragg. Her information comes from Adari County, MO history books:
John C. DeWitt was born 10 Jan 1867 in Sullivan Co., MO. John C DeWitt died ? Aug 1939 in Kirksville, Adair Co, MO. He married Annie/Anne Dail in 1894 in Humphreys, MO. She was born 5 May 1866 near Springfield, IL. Their children were son, J. M.(Meryl?), son R. H. (Richard?) and son Dale DeWitt.
John C. DeWitt was the son of Johnson DeWitt and Martha Wright. Johnson and Martha had 4 more daughters.
sigh... I still do not know who they descend from.
In Jan 2008, I found a passport application for Dale DeWitt, born 19 Oct 1898 in Humphreys, MO. The application was dated 8 May 1922. He stated he was the son of J. C. DeWitt. A J. M. Wattenbarger stated that he knew him and that he was Dale's uncle. Dale was going to sail to Europe on the Mauretania ship from New York City on 27 Jun 1922. There is a photo of him attached to the application.

From the History of Adair, Sullivan, Putnam and Schuyler Counties of Missouri, 1888. page 794
From the History of Sullivan County, Missouri Vol. II
Joel DeWitt, M.D., a resident of Bowman Township, was born in Jackson County, W. Va., in 1816, and is the son of Thomas and Mary M. Buffington DeWitt. The father was of French origin, born in Pennsylvania in 1780, and a farmer by occupation. At the age of sixteen he left the Keystone state and went to Jackson County, W. Va. where he spent his last days, dying in 1862. His wife, Mary M. (Buffington) DeWitt was born in Virginia in 1782, and died in 1886. Her father brought the island known as Buffington Island, situated in the Ohio River (and upon which Gen. Morgan and his men were captured) of the United States Government. Mrs. DeWitt was the mother of a family of ten children of whom Joel DeWitt was the eldest. He received his early education at the subscription schools of the neighborhood in which he resided, and at the age of twenty-two began the study of medicine, his preceptor being Dr. Joseph Mairs of Ripley, Jackson Co. Va., about two years.
In1842, he married Rachel Ann Mairs, who was born in Jefferson City, Ohio in 1823 and is the daughter of Dr. Joseph Mairs. This union has been blessed with seven children: Mary M. (deceased), Joseph, T. Byron, Margaret J. (wife of Warren McCullough); William H. W. , Mark and Elnora (wife of John Hart).
In 1844 Dr. DeWitt began the practice of his chosen profession, and in 1845 left his native state, immigrating to Carroll County, Mo. where he resided eleven months (see comment below), at the expiration of which time he came to Sullivan County. In 1847 he purchased 168 acres of land in Bowman Township, upon which he settled, and where he since resided, (See 1850 census record below.) with the exception of fifteen years (from 1857 to 1872) spent in Milan. Dr. DeWitt is a graduate from the medical department of the University of Missouri, located in St. Louis, from which institution he received his diploma in 1850.
He is the oldest resident physician of Sullivan County, and during his early experience endured many hardships in the cause of suffering humanity. He was called to administer to the wants of patients living within the radius of seventy miles, his travels extending into Linn, Grundy, Putnam, Adair, Mercer and Sullivan Counties, Mo. and sometimes taking him into Iowa. He made his own comfort subservient to his profession, and visited the sick both day and night, at all seasons of the year, whenever his services were required. He was sometimes obliged to swim streams and travel miles without seeing a dwelling, and from sheet exhaustion would sleep while driving from one patient to another. His profession has proved lucrative, and he increased his original land possessions until he became the owner of 2,000 acres, making him one of the largest land holders and taxpayers in the county.
He has been very liberal to his children, starting them into the world for themselves with good advice and well-filled purses, and consequently at present own about 1,200 acres of the above mentioned land. He is comfortably situated in a commodius two-story brick dwelling, and is reaping the rewards of a well-spent life.
In politics he is a republican, and cast his first presidential vote for William H. Harrison in 1840. In 1849 he was elected by the Whig party, and sent to the State Legislature, serving two years with great efficiency. During the late war, he was a strong Union man, and in 1862 enlisted in the forty-fourth Regiment Missouri Volunteer Infantry, being elected surgeon of same.
In the spring of 1865 upon the close of the war, he was honorably discharged. He is a member of the Blue Lodge in Masonry, and a man of great force of character, universally esteemed and honored by his large circle of friends and acquaintances.

Return to topI wrote to Eugene Audsley (eaudsley@carolnet.com) who lives in the DeWitt, MO area and asked him about the source of DeWitt, MO's name and this is what he wrote back:
The town of DeWitt, Carroll Co., Missouri Mystery: Family traditions have taught me that the town of DeWitt, MO in Carroll County, MO was named after Dr. Joel DeWitt but I do not have any confirmation of this legend. Note that the information above states that Dr. Joel lived in Carroll County for only a year. (He moved to Sullivan Co to spend the rest of his life. Sullivan Co., is due north of Chariton Co, with Linn Co. in between.)
Why would the community name the town after him?
DeWitt, MO is located in the center of this 1895 map.
You can access the entire map for Missouri at: MAP
Good Morning Dr. DeWitt! We are pleased to have your inquiry about our small town of Dewitt, MO. As to your main question, it was not named for a man with the name of DeWitt, as far as we know. There was a very fine history of Dewitt printed some years ago which is now out of print and no issues available. From it: The town of DeWitt is in the SE quarter of section 24 Township 23 Range 21. Jonathan Eppler was the first permanent resident of Dewitt Township. He came from Alabama in 1826, and established a landing on the Missouri river. For a number of years this was known as Eppler's Landing. He sold his land to Eli Gutherie on Mar 28, 1835. The Epplers left Carroll County in 1836.
It is Eli Gutherie who is given credit for laying out and platting the town which was first called Elderport. We have Mr. Gutherie's very interesting history, he finally drowned in the Missouri river trying to rescue two men. Gutherie had disposed of his property to Henry Root who began the sale of lots in 1837, and called the town Dewitt. We have no idea or documention for the name.
In 1851 the townsite was bought by a company called the DeWitt Town Company. It was controlled by three trustees- Wood, Windsor, and Fields. They changed the name of the town to Windsor City. The company did not meet with success and the following year it was re-incorporated under the name of Dewitt. DeWitt has a rich and well recorded history, including the Morman War which occured there. It is unfortunate that this history book is not available. There are several very good Carroll County history books which are available from the Carroll County Historical Society, that cover the early history of the county, the towns and the people. The 1882 is our first recommendation, followed by the 1911 Vol. 1.

Joel DeWitt
1840 Census: Jackson Co, VA
Joel would have been 24 in 1840.
There is no record in the 1840 census records for a Joel Dewitt in Virginia.
(Viriginia did not become West Virginia until 1863.)
The 1840 census lists only the head of the family with family members listed in age groups. No names were provided.
If Joel was living with his parents, Thomad and Dewitt, then he might be included in the 1840 census for Thomas.
If Joel was living with Dr. Thomas Mairs, his preceptor, perhaps he was listed with the Mairs family?
- Thomas Dewitt (40-50) with wife (40-50), and daughter (<5: Lucinda), and additional males
- 1 each: (30-40: ?) (20-30: Joel?) (15-20: John?) (10-15: Culberson? or Alexander?) and

Regarding Davidson Myers....
Pamela Gibson wrote to me in 11/2007 to ask about Davidson and related the following story:
There is a story that Davidson's father, Henry Myers, was a cobbler and had made a pair of shoes for Davidson's sister. Davidson filled them with stones and threw them into the river which landed him in serious trouble with his father. Davidson, afraid to return home, ran off to stay with the Indians and - here's when I lose my grip on the story - was somehow saved from further troubles by Dr. DeWitt. Would your family history include more details of this story or perhaps yet another explanation of why Davidson was living with your family?

[I can not figure out whose daughter Ellen is but she may be using a middle name which
I have not seen anywhere.... She would have been born about 1863 and her father was born in
Va while her mother was born in MO.]---- She COULD be Luella Eddyth "Ella" Dewitt (born 1864) who is the daughter
of Thomas Buffington DeWitt (born in VA) and Elizabeth McCullough (born in MO) who is Joseph Culbertson's father's
(Joel DeWitt) brother. so Thomas would be Joseph's uncle.. so she would be a great niece.?? whew!]
[Regardin S????a M.... in 1910, a Eunice DeWitt was living with her sister Mae Hamilton (with husband W. D. Hamilton) in
Kirksville, Adair Co, MO. That would suggest that Mae's maiden name was Dewitt. When I followed Mae Hamilton in the
following years, she showed up as Mae Dewitt Hamilton in 1920 living in Kirksville again, but widowed.
Mae D Witt Hamilton also sailed to Europe on the Leviathan arriving in NYC, NY from Cherbourg, France on 5 Sep 1927!
She was living in Kirksville again in 1930.
So... perhaps S????a M is Laura Mae DeWitt who has born on Aug 12 1872 according to her listing on the Leviathan.

However, Dr. J. Wallace is mentioned in Thomas Bryon DeWitt's obituary and is listed as a nephew... see above)
Actually... J. Wallace Dewitt, may be John W. Dewitt, son of Joseph. That would make sense. He would also
be a nephew of Thomas Bryon DeWitt.

Warren McCullough
(from Seitz genealogy)Margaret Josephine DeWitt McCullough
(from Seitz genealogy)He was born 30 Jan. 1839 in Boonville, Cooper County, Mo. He died 13 May 1906 in Sullivan County, Mo., and is buried Oakwood or Milan Cemetery in Sullivan County.
His parents are John and Elizabeth (Bell) McCullough.
(For more information on them: JOHN.) See Elizabeth in 1880 below.
In the Civil War, he was a member of the 66th Regiment Missouri Militia, serving as first lieutenant (commissioned 30 Aug. 1862) of Company I and afterward as captain of Company B. At least one source says he was present but not a participant in the battle of Shiloh, at which his father was taken prisoner, but I suspect this may have been his brother Webster.
In 1876, Warren was one of three men who formed private bank at Milan, which did business until 1884 when it became First National Bank. He was involved in various businesses, most notably owner of hardware store. A Republican, he was elected Sullivan County sheriff in 1864 and re-elected 1866, serving a total of four years. He later served one-year terms as alderman from Milan's Second Ward in 1882, 1884 and 1886 and as city clerk in 1887.
She was born 8 July 1849 in Sullivan County, Mo., and died 30 April 1937 in Quincy, Ill., while visiting her daughter, Annie Winters. She is buried in Oakwood or Milan Cemetery. Her parents are Joel and Rachael Ann (Mairs) DeWitt. She was known as Josephine or Josie her entire life. Josephine married Warren McCullough on 2 July 1865, in Milan and they had nine children. In 1887, she served as head of committee on scientific instructions in the schools for the Women's Christian Temperance Union, an organization in which she was long active. Josephine and Warren also frequently took in and raised children other than their own.

MAIRS INFORMATION (Return to top)
Also from the Seitz geneology website:
Benjamin Mairs was born c.1782, probably in the Ulster part of Ireland. He died after 1830, possibly in Jefferson County, OH.
Best guess is that he and his wife, Rachel Kennedy, came to this country about 1815. Naturalized Sep. 24, 1822, in Jefferson
County, OH. Benjamin and Rachel had three or four children. (one of which is Joseph seen below.) (Also see my website for Benjamin Mairs.)
Joseph Mairs was born 3 June 1799 in County Derry, Ireland (Ulster), a son of Benjamin Mairs and Rachel Kennedy. He died 13 July 1870,
in Sullivan County, MO. Joseph came to United States as young man with parents. He, his parents and siblings were naturalized as citizens
of United States on 24 Sept. 1822 in Jefferson County, OH. One questionable source says he taught school several terms in Pennsylvania;
was supposedly proficient in mathematics and penmanship and was once offered $3,500 per year salary to teach in Philadelphia, which he
declined. He did study medicine and began practice in Jackson County, (W.)Va., where he moved before 1830 from Jefferson County, OH.
He abandoned medical practice about 1860, perhaps earlier as he is called farmer in 1850 census, and moved to Sullivan County,
MO., in 1865, where he farmed until death (died while working in hay field). He married Margaret Bell 18 July 18, 1822, in Jefferson County, OH.
They had nine children. Margaret Bell was born c.1801, possibly in Ohio, and died in 1852 in Jackson County (W.)Va.

According to the Sullivan County Cemeteries there is a Mairs Cemetery:
Located on what used to be Noel Bennett's farm in the mid-1950's; about 1/2 mile East of Browning.Mairs Creek
We even have a stream named after our Mairs ancestors just south of Browning, MO. You can see the map here: Mairs Creek.
