JOHN
INFORMATION
b. Abt 1759 in France
(See UNKNOWN DeWitt Clan in France)
John and his family migrated
to Muses Bottom in 1807.
Their story is described at:
Ohio River Migration.
d. 14 Jan 1820 in Mason Co., VA
(now Jackson Co., WV) (FindAGrave)
John
and Nancy's tombstones were
apparently destroyed in the 1920s
when rocks were quarried out of the
Ohio River facing western bank
below the DeWitt cemetery.
It is located at the junction of
Rt 68
and Murraysville Road (CR 2) north
of
Ravenswood, Jackson Co., WV.
In Aug 2008, a sign facing Rt 68
about a 50 yards north of the
junction states DeWitt Smith Cemetery.
*I have no idea if he spelled
his named DeWitt or Dewitt.
Could he write at all?
His name is all heard as Duett.
Sounds French to me!

Probably
because he was born in 1790 or later. The fact that he didn't show up
in 1790 is a pretty good indication that he wasn't born yet, although
we know how poor (really rotten) some census records are. In 1850
he was 55, in 1860 he was 65 and in 1870, he was 78. All of those
indicate he was born after 1790. Jackson County death records show he
died 3/12/1879, age 88, while his gravestone shows he died 3/16/1879,
aged 90. While the Jackson Co death records are a total mess, I think
the census data supports that age more than the gravestone which may
have been bought later by someone who may have not known exact dates or
his exact age, since so many people were not quite so sure of facts
then.
There is a Rhodes who lived about that same time period who was
supposed to have been over 100 when he died. Census records indicate a
different story. So while it's obvious that so many people had no real
idea of their ages, when they are consistent from one census to the
next, I have to assume that they are at least CLOSE to the right age.
So maybe Thomas was born in 1791 which would be consistent with the 1790 census information about his father.

Because she died so early in life, her name is not listed on any census
record. Family members were not listed in 1810, 1820 or 1830
censuses.
Son Henry's 1900 census record stated that his mother was born in WV.
Daughter Sarah's 1880, 1900 and 1910 census records stated that her mother was born in VA.
Daughter Elizabeth's 1880, 1900 and 1910 census records stated that her mother was born in VA.
SInce parents moved to Muses Bottom VA in 1807, Nancy's VA birthstate
suggests that the family lived somewhere else in VA around 1801.
One suggestion is Belleville, Wood Co, VA which is just a few miles up
the Ohio River. Fort Belleville was a place of safety during the
Amerindian war of the 1790s. One ref suggests the Dewitts lived
there before arriving in Mason Co VA in 1807.

In ancestry.com I found a reference for a Samuel Hall who was born 1 Jan 1798 in Rockbridge Co, VA.
It
also stated that he died in the same county... which is somewhat
doubtful if he was buried in Dewitt Cemetery in what was then Wood Co.
also
listed in H.D. Somerville's History of Grant District in the Dewitt
Cemetery
section
There is a Samuel Hall living
in Wood Co, VA in the 1830 census but he has 2 boys and 2 girls under
5. Both parents are listed as <30. If they married in
1829, then this may not be them unless they had 4 kids in the first
year!!
There is a Samuel D Hall living Harrison Co, VA in 1830 which is just
east of Wood Co. He was listed with 3 female and 2 male children
along with a wife, so this fits better.

Notes:
West Virgina
became a state in 1863 at the beginning of the Civil War , so dates
referring to Virginia
before that time and
West Virginia after that time could be only a
reflection of statehood rather than people moving.

March 1, 1831, the
General Assembly of Virginia granted a petition requesting the
formation
of a new county including rich and fertile lands from Kanawha, Mason
and
Wood counties occupied at the time by some 3,500 settlers. The new
county
was named Jackson in honor of then President of the United States,

FACTS (Skip to 2009 news.)
- 1760:
- One of John's possible fathers, Ezekiel
Dewitt (Bef 1741 - 1792) married Maria Keller on 6 Apr 1760 in Kaatsbaan, Ulster Co.,
NY. (ancestry.com)
- 1768:
- Ezekiel DeWitt
was living in the area around today's Confluence, PA in Turkeyfoot
Township in Bedford Co. (later Somerset Co.), Pennsylvania:
- "According to authentic records,
namely, the testimony of Rev. Capt. John Steel, who visited this
locality in April, 1768 the following persons were then resident at or
near Turkeyfoot: Henry Abrahams, Ezekiel Dewitt, James Spencer,
Benjamin Jennings, John Cooper, Ezekiel Hichman, John Enslow, Henry
Enslow and Benjamin Pursley. Some of these doubtless lived within
the bounds of Addison Township (which was crated in 1800.) " (REF)
This area is very close to subsequent sightings of Ezekiel listed below.
- Click HISTORY to
read a chronologial history of the region and DETAILED
to read more about the details.
- The Turkeyfoot is the junction
of the Castleman's River and the Laurel Hill Creek, also known
as the North fork, with the Youghiogheny River [pronounced yah-kuh-GAIN-ee.] (REF)
- Here is the map of the region as of 2004:

- 1776:
- Ezekiel
DeWitt
was living in Ohio County, Virginia in
1776 when the settlers gathered to decide upon the location of their
future court:
- "In
compliance with the provisions of said Act of the General Assembly, and
of certain instructions addressed to him, John McColloch, Esq.,
summoned the landholders within the county to convene, on the 27th day
of December, 1776, at the cabin of Ezekiel Dewitt, Esq., situated on
Buffalo Creek, for the purpose of electing and constituting a committee
in said county, and also to make choice of a place where county courts
were to be held in future
in said county. The convention met at the time and place mentioned, and
by a vote of the majority of those present decided in favor of Black's
Cabin, situated on the water of Short Creek. The present site of West Liberty was
originally improved by Abraham Vanmetre. His daughter Ruth married
Reuben Foreman, and another daughter named Hannah married Providence
Mounts. Foreman and Mounts laid out the town of West liberty, which was
organized November 20, 1787. It was the first town organized in the
Ohio Valley. " (History of Wheeling and Ohio Co, WV, printed in
1902: REF)
- As
you can see below, Ohio County (green are in map shown below) is VERY close to Westmoreland Co., PA
(pink area) where John DeWitt was first detected in 1790. Note
that in 1776, (map)
the southwest corner of PA was simply Westmoreland Co. Note that

- From
Cheryl Gallagher (4/12/04):
I'm not sure if I mentioned this before, but Cathy Green also believes
we descend from Ezekiel DeWitt. When I was in PA, I stopped
by the courthouse in Washington Co. I only found 2
references to Ezekiel DeWitt - Deed Book 1D, p. 86 deed to Casper
Rumenagh recorded 7 Aug 1787 and Deed Book 1C, p. 31-33 deed to
Joseph Jones recorded 26 Apr 1786. They did
not mention any other DeWitts. - From
Cheryl Gallagher (4/18/04):
While I
was in Westmoreland Co, PA a couple of years ago, I made a point to
stop by Confluence, in Someret Co, just in case we do descend from
Ezekiel. I went to the courthouse in Washington Co hoping to find
some deed that listed family members but I only found 2 deeds and no
family members were listed (darn). I think I read somewhere that
Ezekiel did have a son named John but he was married to someone else
(ie not Nancy Culbertson). I'll can't find this but I'll keep
looking. Of course, Nancy could be a second wife...
|
- 1790:

- In
the 1790
census for Westmoreland Co, PA in Hempfield
Township, John
Culbertson and a John Dewit
were listed next to each other which I
assume
means they lived next to each other. (Westmoreland Co, is county 11
above and below.) (In
some census records in the early years of the census effort, people
were listed in alphabetical order so it was not possible to determine
where one family lived in relation to another other than within the
same census district. Since this list is not alphabetical, it seems
like it is safe to assume the Culbertsons and Dewits were neighbors.)
The
date was 14 April 1790. So I
guess what had happened
is that John Dewit fell
in
love with Nancy
Culbertson, and married her. Then they settled down in the house
next to her father. John Dewit was listed as living
with one female who we can assume was Nancy. If the date was 14 April,
1790, and their first son Thomas
is said to have been born
in 1789, why was he not listed as an infant when the census was
taken in 1790? Perhaps Thomas was not born in 1789? There
is obviously more to the story than was
passed down through the years. (Click on Culbertson
to see my new
CulbertsonAncestry website.)
- 1790
Map of
Pennsylvania Counties:
- County 13 is Fayette Co., county 12 is Washington Co.,
county 11 is
Westmoreland Co. and county 9 is Bedford Co.

- In 1790, Virginia had changed too!

- I have not found any reference to Ezekiel Dewitt in the 1790 census.
|
- 1792:
- According
to the Colman / Earle Family Tree at
Ancestry.com, Ezekiel Dewitt died in 1792. He was married to
Maria Keller. In this genealogy, his father was Jan
Dewitt and his mother was Ariaantje
Osterhoundt. No other
information
is available to prove that connection. (REF)
- Recently I
have found information that puts doubt on the idea that Ezekiel was our
John Dewitt's father. (This was written in 2005.)
- Some references state that Ezekiel's son John's wife was Catharine Quick rather than Nancy Culbertson.

2009 INFORMATION (As of January 5th)
The author of this website is the great great great great grandson of John Dewitt.
Recently I joined the DeWitt DNA Project with the hopes of connecting my Y-chromosome
37 marker analysis to another Dewitt from one of the known clans who arrived in the 1600s:
Current analysis of my Y-chromosome 37 marker DNA results, which for
now represents all of the male DeWitts descendant from John Dewitt, and
therefore all of the mentioned or unmentioned females) suggests that we
are NOT related within 500 years of the people who have had their DNA
analyzed and are members of the FamilyTree DeWitt DNA Project.
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/dewittfamilydna/default.aspx
Up to this time, three 1600s Dewitt clans have been claimed.
a. Tjerck Dewitt from Kingston NY area
b. Jan Dewitt from Long Island area
c. Jacob Dewitt from Virginia area
My DNA does not match (at the 37 marker analysis level) with any members in the DeWitt DNA group.
There are currently 19 other members. This analysis is on the Y chromosome only.
This means that:
a. There is a fourth Dewitt clan from whom our John Dewitt descends.
b. There was an adoption in Don's line somewhere back in time.
c. There was an illegitimate birth somwhere back in time.
d. There were these "nonpaternal events (b & c)" in the history of the other DeWitt DNA member's lines.
In case b. or c., this issue may affect only my line from Thomas DeWitt (1791-1879),
or many other lines shown on this document.
In cases a and d., we need more DNA to further evaluate.
This challenge is the reason for this document. We need more male Dewitt DNA!
Please contact me if you can advise or help.

More 2009 INFORMATION (As of January 22nd)
The author of this website was recently contacted by a descendant of Thomas Buffington DeWitt, Sr. who was the son of Thomas Dewitt,
who was the first son of John and Nancy Dewitt. Terry Say Meehan
sent me several photos but also scans of certain Fresno County,
California history books. The following is of great significance:

On
page 911-912 was written a story about MADLAIN (McCullough)DeWITT, who was the wife of Thomas Buffington DeWitt, Sr. It is a four
paragraph story. I have included a transcription below because it
mentions without naming, him, John DeWitt in paragraph 3. The
importance is that this document claims that this ancestor was born in
France.
------Paragraph 1------
“MADLAIN
DeWITT. --- A distinguished lady of Selma, the descendant of noted
American Forebears, and highly esteemed in the town where she is best
known as the widow of a very worthy citizen, Mrs. Madlain DeWitt enjoys
a wide circle of friends. She was born in Sullivan Coutny, Mo., and is
a daughter of John McCullough who married Elizabeth Bell, a native of
Pittsburgh, the ceremony taking place in Pennsylvania. He had been
born in Ohio, went South to Louisiana, then North again and West to
Missouri, where in Sullivan County he develped a farm; and when the
Civil War broke out, he enlisted in the Union Army, served with the
Twenty-third Missouri Volunteers, and was made a major. Eight children
were born to these devoted parents, among whom our subject was the
fifth and the oldest girl.
------Paragraph 2------
She
grew up in Sullivan County, attended the common schools, and when
twenty-one years of age was there married to Thomas Buffington DeWitt,
a native of Virginia who served in the Home Guards at Milan, Mo. He was
a farmer and stock-raiser at first in Adair County, that state, in
1872, and in 1884 came to Fresno County, where they settled on a ranch
four miles north of Selma, on what was known as the Russell Quarter.
They had ten children, of whom the second daughter, Luella E., now Mrs.
Garnet Adkins of Los Angeles, was married in Missouri, and the seventh
child, a little girl named Alta, died there; so that they brought with
them to California eight children, namely: Mary Elizabeth, who is Mrs.
W. H. Say; William Henry, the blacksmith at Caruthers; Oscar, a
well-borere at Selma; Florence, the wife of W. J. Boles of Fresno, a
rancher near Caruthers; Viola, wife of R. M. Pettus, a housepainter in
Oakland; Shearon, an engineer at Sacramento; and Thomas Buffington, at
Selma.
------Paragraph 3------
This
son, Thomas Buffington, recalls Mrs. DeWitt’s husband, who was born at
Wheeling, Va., in 1833, the son of Thomas DeWitt, a Virginia farmer,
whose estate near Wheeling is still owned by a member of the DeWitt
family. His father, in turn, was born in France, became a soldier in
the French Army, and came to America with Lafayette, to aid in the
great struggle for American Independence.
------Paragraph 4------
Mrs.
DeWitt is an active member of the Presbyterian Church and there, as
well as in such circles as the Red Cross, works for the betterment of
society. Her duaghter, Mrs. W. H. Say, is a well-known club-woman, and
was president of the Woman’s Improvement Club at Selma for five
consecutive years, an organization that has accomplished much for that
beautiful town. Upon leaving that office she turned over $1,200 in
cash, which had been raised during her incumbency, and was in turn
presented with a beautiful hand-painted jardiniere, by the club, in
appreciation of her vauled services.”
-------END-------
Thank you Terry Meehan for this resource.
If
anyone has access to information about Lafayette that verifies this
1919 claim about our DeWitt ancestor, please contact me. Lafayette’s
first ship was called the Victory and they arrived in 1777 in Virginia.
Several men accompanied him. We now need to determine if a DeWitt came
with him. Hopefully, it was our John DeWitt.

- 1800:
- There is no census record for Virginia in 1800.
- No John Dewit is listed in PA in 1800 either.
- A John Culbertson is listed as living in Hopewell Township, Washington Co, PA in 1800
- Washington Co Map 1800
- But he supposedly died in 1797???? If he did,
then Margaret Culbertson should be listed in the 1800 census, but I can
not find her. One is listed (Margart Culbertson) in Cecil Co, MD but
she is under 45.
- The West Virginia area (before WV was WV) in 1800 is shown below:

- 1807:
- The
first settler at Muse's
Bottom, Virginia, (See map above.) was John Dewitt
(some
of the old settlers
pronounce it Doo-it), who built the first cabin, in 1807. (from
"Pioneers of Jackson County", by John House,
where it appears in the Section "Lower Sandy Valley".) Their story is described at: Ohio River Migration.
- (Across
the river in Ohio, there is also a Dewitt Run (a creek) across from Muses Bottom. (Did you see DeWitt
Cemetery ?... It was not used for a few more years.))
- 1810:

- (which later
became Jackson Co, VA and then in 1863... West Virginia.) with the
following household mix:

- Note: If
you try to find
John Dewit in the ancestry.com 1810 census database, they have him
cataloged as John Dinet. On 4/14/04 I requested that they fix
this
error.

- Note also
that in the same area, Jacob and Abraham Buffington were living along
with their father Joel Buffington. Of course, Jacob and Abraham's
sister, Magdalena, married John Dewitt's first son Thomas Dewitt.
- In ancestry.com I have received a claim that John was born on
23 Apr 1750 in Westmoreland,Pennsylvania,USA
however if in 1810 John was no older than 44, then the earliest he was
born would be 1810 - 44=1766.

- 1820: 1820
census of Mason Co., VA
- In 1820 three Dewitt families are listed in Mason Co., VA. (1820 census.. scroll down .. the list is alphabetical)

- Who are Thomas and John Duett?
- This John is probably not our John because John
Dewitt has been listed as dying on 14 Jan 1820 which would have been before this census.
- Thomas above is probably our John's first son
Thomas (1789-1879) who would have been 31 in 1820. By 1820 he had
had one son Joel (b 1816) and two daughters Nancy (b 1814) and Lydia (b
1819). His wife Mary Buffington would have been 23 in 1820.
There are discrepancies with their family status and the census
listing. Thomas should have been listed in the 4th column, not
the 5th. There is another female in the 16 to 26 range, but that
could have been household staff or visiting niece?
- John
above is probably John's son John (1792-1840). John Jr. would have been
28 in 1820. He married Catherine Derenberger in 1818 in Wood Co,
Va which is the county north of Mason Co. It is somewhat
confusing to see that another male and female in the same age range
were living with him, but that could be staff or relatives as is often
seen later in the century when names are included in census records.
- Also in Mason Co, was Nancy (Culbertson) Dewitt who would be the widow of John Dewitt, Sr., who died on 14 Jan 1820 and of course the mother of Thomas and John, Jr. (1820 census.. scroll down .. the list is alphabetical)

grave has been destroyed sometime
through the years due to collapse of the cliff due to nearby quarry
activity. In 1981 and 2008 I visited the cemetery and his gravestone was

- 1830
- Son of John DeWitt, Thomas "Duett" is listed with
4 male children and 2 female children
along with a wife less than 40 and himself older than 40, living in
Mason Co, VA. A John Duett is also listed. (1830 Census.. scroll down .. the list is alphabetical.)
|

|
- The Thomas Duett males could be: Joel(<15), John
(<10), Culbertson (<5) and Alexander (<5) plus Thomas (but he
should be 40 to 41.)
- The Thomas Duett females could be: Nancy (<10),
Lydia (<15), and Magdaline (<40)
- Who is John Duett?
- Probably Thomas's younger brother John who
would be 38, but this shows 4 children living with he and his wife,
Catherine Derenberger. The problem is that they supposedly had no
children. (See above Children of John Dewitt,
Sr.)
- Regarding Nancy Culbertson Dewitt....
- Henry
Sherman(<40) is listed living in Mason Co, VA with 1 boy under
5, 1 girl
under 20 and 1 female under 30 (wife Phoebe?--daughter
of John
and Nancy DeWitt) PLUS 1 female under
60.... could this be the MISSING Mother of Phoebe? Nancy
Culbertson
DeWitt, widower? She would be 60 in 1830. Henry Sherman is
listed on the same page as his brother Isaac B. Sherman, husband of
John and
Nancy's daughter, Nancy Elizabeth Dewitt. Were Henry and Isaac's
father was Abel Sherman and their mother was Hulda Richards.

- 1831:
- On
March 1, 1831, the
General Assembly of Virginia granted a petition requesting the
formation
of a new county including rich and fertile lands from Kanawha, Mason
and
Wood counties occupied at the time by some 3,500 settlers. The new
county
was named Jackson in honor of then President of the United States,
Andrew
Jackson. (From Jackson

- 1840:
- John Digewt (Dewitt) (40-50) is listed living in Jackson Co, VA with 1 male
under 5, 1 girl
under 5, 1 woman 20-30 and wife 40-50.

- Of course the question is: Who is THIS John Dewitt, since
our John died in 1820? Could this be John Jr.? who died in 1840 and
was married to Catharine Derenberger?
- A complete listing of the Jackson county census in 1840 can be found at: LISTING
- Henry
Sherman(<50) is listed living in Jackson Co, VA on 1 Jun 1840 with 2 boys
under 5, 2 boys under 10, 1 girl
under 30 and 1 female under 20? (wife Phoebe DeWitt--daughter
of John and Nancy DeWitt) PLUS 1 female under 70.... could this be the
MISSING Mother of Phoebe? Nancy Culbertson
DeWitt, widower? She would be 70 in 1840.

- Also seen above is John W Rayrdon who was John Woodruff Rardin, the husband of Martha Charlotte DeWitt, daughter of John and Nancy DeWitt. So the two sisters were living near each other.
- Martha and John Rardin had 15 children between 1817
and 1847! In 1840 they would have had 12 or 13 children! In
the census record above, they had 3 male children and 7 female children
living with them.

- Nancy
Culbertson Dewitt who was born in 1770 died on 15
Aug 1841. (Click
on her name to see my new CulbertsonAncestry website.)
- Rumor
has it that she was buried in the Dewitt
Cemeterynear
Murraysville,

grave has been destroyed sometime
through the years due to collapse of the cliff due to nearby quarry
activity. I have visited the cemetery in 1981 and 2008 and her
gravestone was not
evident. In a book written by Carolyn Mihlbach called "Grant
District Cemeteries, Jackson County, West Virginia, Tombstone
Inscriptions and Genealogical Information", Nancy Dewitt is listed on
page 9a by Sue Proctor Miller in 1960 , as buried in this cemetery.
After that 1960 date, rocks were quarried out of the bank of the hill
on which the cemetery is found. John and Nancy's graves were
apparently destroyed in that process.
- John was
born about 1740/41
in PA ???. He was listed in the 1790 Westmoreland Co, census. He
died in 1797 in Hempfield Twp, Westmoreland Co,
PA. When he died, he left a widow, Margaret. It is not know for sure
that she is
the mother of his children.
