| NOTES: * Sullivan County, Missouri Cemetery Records, Volumes 1 via Ancestry.com ** I am not sure all of these people are children of Joseph.... their parent's initials and dates are appropriate though. In 1900 & 1910 census, Elizabeth said that she had given birth to 10 children of which only 5 were alive so all of these young deaths seem accurate. Was Joseph a Civil War veteran? Return to Top I found a listing for a Joseph C. Dewitt 1. FIRST SERVICE I have not been able to find any sites about the 44th Regiment Missouri Volunteer Infantry and the 153rd Regiment, Illinois Infantry (1 yr 1865).???? Also serving in the same regiment

DeWitt) Milan Republican Thurs 23 Mar 1922 OBIT 2: (Elizabeth McCullough DeWitt) Milan Standard 1938OBIT 3: (Thomas Byron DeWitt) Milan Republican Thurs 25 Feb 1904 (Thomas Bryon DeWitt) Passes Away by far off Pacific Dr. Bryon DeWitt, a former Sullivan County boy dies Saturday, Feb'y 20, 1904 Warren McCullough received a telegram from Dr. Wallace DeWitt Sunday announcing the sad news of the death of Dr. Thomas Bryon DeWitt in San Francisco, Cal., Saturday, Feb 20, 1904... Dr. "By" DeWitt as he was known here, was the son of the late Dr. Joel DeWitt and Mrs. Margaret A. DeWitt. He was born is Sullivan County Aug 25, 1848 on the old home place near Reger, MO, and was reared to manhood in this county. Milan Republican 31 Mar 1904 (Thomas Byron DeWitt again) Dr. Byron DeWitt died of apoplexy Dr. J. Wallace of Antioch...hurried to the bedside of his uncle... When Dr. DeWitt came out from the East a number of years ago he first located in Antioch practiced medicine and was a half owner in the largest drug store in town. It was here that he became acquainted with and married his wife, who was then Miss Sapie Rapp... One son, Hugh Bryon DeWitt, aged ten years, is the result of this union. NOTE: Antioch is the city that Dr. J. Wallace DeWitt lived in, in California, near Oakland, in1910, next door to Joseph C. Dewitt. Dr. J. Wallace appears to be John W. DeWitt, son of Joseph C. DeWitt. The last paragraph above seems to refer to J. Wallace DeWitt, because the 1910 census shows that his wife was born in CA, although Nettie has been married before. It is not clear is Hugh Byron is the son of Thomas Byron DeWitt, or J(ohn) W(allace) DeWitt. |

Census Records Joseph Culbertson DeWitt (age 35) and wife Elizabeth (age 35), with son John W (age 11), daughter S????a M (age 8), daughter Martha (age 6), daughter Blanche (age 4), and son Joel C (age 1), and niece Ellen Dewitt (age 17). [I can not figure out whose daughter she is but she may be using a middle name which I have not seen anywhere.... She would have been born about 1863 and her father was born in Va while her mother was born in MO.]---- She COULD be Luella Eddyth "Ella" Dewitt (born 1864) who is the daughter of Thomas Buffington DeWitt (born in VA) and Elizabeth McCullough (born in MO) who is Joseph Culbertson's father's (Joel DeWitt) brother. so Thomas would be Joseph's uncle.. so she would be a great niece.?? whew! |

[Regardin S????a
M.... in 1910, a Eunice DeWitt was living with her sister Mae Hamilton
(with husband W. D. Hamilton) in
Kirksville, Adair Co, MO. That would suggest that Mae's maiden
name was Dewitt. When I followed Mae Hamilton in the
following years, she showed up as Mae Dewitt Hamilton in 1920
living in Kirksville again, but widowed.
Mae D Witt Hamilton also sailed to Europe on the Leviathan arriving in
NYC, NY from Cherbourg, France on 5 Sep 1927!
She was living in Kirksville again in 1930.
So... perhaps S????a M is Laura Mae DeWitt who has born on Aug 12 1872 according to her listing on the Leviathan.

Census Records Joseph Culbertson DeWitt and wife Elizabeth, with daughter Eunice and son Ernest. (It is not clear who the second DeWitt family is. Is it Dr. J. Wallace DeWitt? He was born in WV in 1871. However, Dr. J. Wallace is mentioned in Thomas Bryon DeWitt's obituary and is listed as a nephew... see above) Actually... J. Wallace Dewitt, may be John W. Dewitt, son of Joseph. That would make sense. He would also be a nephew of Thomas Bryon DeWitt. |
