** Alternate middlenames:(Sophie?) (Soffie) (Sofa) (Sophia) but in two handwritten notes from Mary, she spelled it Soffa or Sofa. Tombstone states it was spelled Sophia.

The only evidence that I have that Mary used Harmon as her maiden last name instead of her father's last name Harman is found on a handwritten note (see below) in which she used Harmon.

Details from William's Obit (undated): Read his Obit: OBIT

Mr. Richardson's family settled near Clifton Hill (south of Macon, MO in Randolph Co.) in 1867 and came to Chariton County in 1881 where he spent his adult life with the exception of five years in Colorado (at least 1887 see photo 1887) and four years in Nebraska (1909-1912?). When he was 18 (in 1884?) he became a member of the New Liberty Christian church in the Mike community. (It is located in the northwestern corner of Muscle Fork Township, Chariton, Co. MO.)

Obit says he has two sisters:
Alice Harlan of Moberly, MO (Mrs. John T. Harlan) and
Blanche Lambert of Quincy, IL (Mrs. Charles J Lambert)
(note: in photo below, a sister is listed as Bell along with Alice and William)

Note also: Rev. Vencil E. Lambert of Bevier, MO conducted the services according to WP's OBIT.  Vencil was the son of Lester Lambert, who was the son of Charles J. Lambert and Blanche Richardson, WP's sister.  So the Reverend was WP's great-nephew.

One obituary also states that WP had one son precede him in death. That son would be Russell Howard Richardson who died as an infant in 1902.

The first obituary also states his birthdate as 1856 which is a typo.  All other information supports 1866.

(Death Cert.)

A Harmon Richardson died in Chariton Co, MO in Feb 1952. (Death Certificate)

According to the D.C. (see link above) he was born in 15 May 1874 and his wife was Effie (b 1879) and daughter was Lucille (b 1914).  He lived in Randolph Co. MO, in 1930
Also registered for draft in 1918 when he was 44 in Randolph Co, MO

He is NOT our Harmon, because his father was Buse Harmon Richardson and his mother was Martha Jane Conrad.

Family history says that he disappeared as a late teenager and was never heard from again.... but I found a Harlan H. Richardson, age 18, in the 1920 Census (shown below), living as a hired hand with M. Morgan, in Madison Township in Fremont Co, IA (ED 71, page 8A) on 23 Apr 1920. At the time of the census recording, Harlan would be 19 not 18.... so is this really our Harlan?... probably.  I can find no other Harlan H. Richardson in the US in 1920.

Notes:
  • Birthdates:  Just when I was most frustrated, I started cleaning my office, and what do I find, written by Mary Frances Richardson DeWitt? A complete listing of all her siblings with their birthdates and birthplaces!!!! Wow!!! Thanks mom!
  • Harlan Harmon Richardson
    • Thanks to mom's list, the mystery of Harmon and Harlan is solved.... as it was only Harlan Harmon Richardson who was the first born son.  His name probably came from Mary Soffa's maiden name Harmon and maybe William Pinkerton's sister's married name of Harlan?
    • * WP Richardson's obit says Harlen Richardson is a son and that one other son had preceeded him in death (which is now known to be Russell Howard). Another obit calls Harlan, "Harley" and says he lives in Marceline in 1946!. Herbert's obit says Harlan H. was living in Chillicothe, MO in 1951. (Read Herbert's Obits: OBIT)
    • Harlan can be seen living with his family in Alexandria, Thayer Co., Nebraska in the 1910 census for the family
    • ** Family history says that he disappeared as a late teenager and was never heard from again.... but I found a Harlan H.
    • How did I find this Harlan?  Ancestry.com has indexed the entire US 1920 census, so all you gotta do is type in the name.  Wow!

  • I can not find him in the 1930 census as Harlan, Harlen, Harlin, Harley, Harmon or Harman.
  • I assume Harlan died before 1965 because Mary S. Richardson's obit states three sons had preceeded her in death. I assume the sons are Russell, Herbert and Harlan?.  Family rumors state that he died of a heart attack.
  • Oddly, a Harold Richardson with the same birthdate of 12 Jan 1901 died in the Bronx,  NYC in Feb 1979 via SSDI
  • Russell Howard Richardson
    • He was the only child who did not survive to enjoy at least 40+ years in adult life. I wonder why he did not make it?  At least we now know who the son was that is mentioned in his parent's obituaries.
  • Mildred Ruth Richardson
    • Mary Frances' listing gives her birthday as 30 Dec 1903 which is consistent with the 1920 census. I found her middle name on this list as well.
    • More on Mildred can be seen below.
    • A great photo of Mildred, Ruby, Bertha, Mary Frances, and Mary Soffa Richardson with several husbands and children in the early 1940s can be see at CLAN. Norman is there too!
  • Ruby Edith Richardson
    • Mary Frances' listing gives her birthday as 18 Jan 1905 which is consistent with the 1920 census. I found her middle name on this list as well.
    • Her Obit however states she was born on 18 Jan 1906 which is even more consistent with the 1920 census.
    • A great photo of Mildred, Ruby, Bertha, Mary Frances, and Mary Soffa Richardson with several husbands and children in the early 1940s can be see at CLAN. Norman is there too!
  • Herbert Chester Richardson
    • Herbert lived in Cleveland before he joined the Army in 1942.  He married Helen but I do not know when they divorced or if she died.
    • On 6 Mar 1942 a Herbert C Richardson who was born in 1907 enlisted in the US Army at Camp Perry Lacarne, in Cuyahoga Co, OH.
He had completed 1 year of high school but maybe they meant college?
      Civil Occupation:    Student, Chemical Engineering
      Marital Status:    Divorced, without dependents
      Height:    71
      Weight:    162

This information is consistent with the information found in his
      OBIT.
Apparently he remained in the Army for the rest of his life.

    • I had no idea that Herbert had ever been maried, but I do not know when he and Helen Voisiet were divorced or if she died. What is really strange is that in the 1930 census (BELOW) a Helen A Voisiet (Voisinet?) is living as a boarder in the home of Anna Harmon in Cleveland Ohio!  This MUST be significant.  Anna Harmon is age 62ish as is widowed.  In 1920 she is also widowed. I can not find her in 1910.  I do not know who she is, but this would explain perhaps why Herbert went to Cleveland because a Harmon relative lived there.
 Voisiet
1930 Census: Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OH 2 Apr 1930
Anna Harmon, age 64 (because 52 in 1920 census), her children, Joe L, Agnes M, Albert G., John T, and boarder Helen A Voisiet.
    • Mary Frances' listing gives his birthday as 22 Jul 1907 which is consistent with the 1920 census. I found his middle name on this list as well.
    • Read Herbert's Obits: OBIT
    • A great photo of Herbert, Wilfred and Marvin at Marvin's gas station can be seen at GAS.
    • A nifty photo of Herbert on his horse can be seen at HORSE
    • A Herbert C Richardson,
  • Wilford Ronald Richardson
    • Wilford was not present in the 1930 census.  Was he away that day or had he left home already?  In the 1920 census, it looks like Wilford was 10 which means he was born in 1910.  Mary Frances' listing gives his birthday as 26 Aug 1909 which is consistent with the 1920 census. I found his middle name on this list as well.
    • A great photo of Herbert, Wilford and Marvin at Marvin's gas station can be seen at GAS.
    • I had been calling him Wilfred, but have changed it to Wilford as he is also called Wilford in his father's OBIT
  • Marvin Virgil Richardson
    • Marvin's middle name was Virgil, his wife's name is Fern Gillespie and his birthday was 12 Apr 1913. All was confirmed by his oldest son.
    • A great photo of Herbert, Wilford and Marvin at Marvin's gas station can be seen at GAS.
  • Norman Raymond Richardson
    • A great photo of Mildred, Ruby, Bertha, Mary Frances, and Mary Soffa Richardson with several husbands and children in the early 1940s can be see at CLAN. Norman is there too!
    • He married Ofelita M. Brown in 1946.  She had a daughter by a previous marriage.
  • John Truman Richardson
    • A great photo of John with his car in 1942 can be seen at CAR.
    • He was living with his parents in 1920 and 1930.
    • He and his family lived in the Chicago area but I do not have any further information.
  • Bertha Elizabeth Richardson
    • Bertha E is listed as 15 in the 1930 census (7 Apr 1930). However the Social Security Records (SSDI state that she was born 4 Sep 1917. This corresponds well with the 1920 census which says that she was 3 on 29 Jan 1920. So on 7 Apr 1930, she should have been listed as 13. This date is consistent with Mary Frances' listing of the siblings. I found her middle name on this list as well.
    • A great photo of Mildred, Ruby, Bertha, Mary Frances, and Mary Soffa Richardson with several husbands and children in the early 1940s can be see at CLAN. Norman is there too!
  • Mary Frances Richardson
    • A great photo of Mildred, Ruby, Bertha, Mary Frances, and Mary Soffa Richardson with several husbands and children in the early 1940s can be see at CLAN. Norman is there too!

Notes:

*
Mildred was married to Fay Haley in 1922. Her age was 18.  The 1930 census says she is 25, but she is 27. More on Mildred can be seen below.
**
I found a Harlan H. Richardson living in Iowa at age 18 in the 1920 census. I have found the 1910 census showing Harlan living in Alexandria, NE.
***
The only information I have about Russell is from a listing written by Mary Frances.
****
The information I have about John's middle name is from a listing written by Mary Frances.  She also gave his birthdate as 7 Mar 1915 which would place him older than Bertha which is not consistent with the 1930 census. I had always grown up hearing that Bertha, Mary and Fern were the three youngest children.
I have arranged the family listing at the top according to the birthdates listed by Mary Frances.

I am leaving the listing here as shown in the 1930 census

he did not own the station when she met

Date: 1942 from the license plate

Information obtained from Ofelita Richardson (widow of Norman Richardson) on 6/23/02.  She related to the son of Marvin Richardson the following:

The house is the "house on the Brunt's farm where the floods would take out the lower house floor only and the family would move to the upper floor during the flood. She explained, "finally the floods took the whole house". Asking where was the farm she explained "close to Mendon Missouri." She further explained that Grandpa Richardson, meaning Marvin's father, (WP Richardson) worked on the railroad as a laborer, laying track, and moved through Nebraska, Colorado, Idaho and Oregon as he followed his work."

Marvin's son related also:

"Dad said something once about a flood taking everything once and they only had beans to eat. As he explained it, I got the feeling that things were really bad at that moment and he never wanted to go through a situation like that again and as such had been able to protect our family."
