was provided by Buff and Joe Huntsman (joeohun @ c212.com).
Commentary by Don DeWitt (9/19/05)
Anyone know who these folks are? According to Buff, they are not California DeWitts so maybe they are Missouri DeWitts? What do you think?
I think there are some Missouri DeWitts in this group. Is this a church picnic, or is it a family group? Actually, I think this photo was taken at Dr. Joel and Rachel DeWitt's home near Reger, Sullivan Co., MO (See comments below.)
version 2: 6/2008
Some identifications????
(For each person mentioned scroll down to see another photo of that person.)
Commentary by Don DeWitt (9/19/05)
- Perhaps the 8th person from the left in the back is Bertha Agnes Swanger (1862-1935)?
- She was the wife of Mark Pinkney DeWitt (1858-1937) who is a son of Dr. Joel and Rachel Mairs DeWitt.
- I think the woman standing 4th from the right side in the first standing row, is Margaret Josephine DeWitt McCullough
(1849-1937).
- She is a daughter of Dr. Joel and Rachel DeWitt. She married Warren McCullough. Another photo of Margaret can be found at Margaret.
- The woman to the right of Margaret in the back row, may be Elfie Maud McCullough Bolt (1868-1963). She is the daughter of Margaret McCullough and grand-daughter of Rachel Mairs DeWitt. (NOTE: Her identity has been brought into doubt in June 2008, by the her grand-daughter Joy McCullough Ware.)
- The woman to the right of Margaret in the same row, in a white dress, who is looking down, may be Hazeldean Bolt Seitz
(1886-1979). She married Enoch Beery Seitz Jr. She is a grand-daughter of Margaret DeWitt McCullough. She is the daughter of Elfie Maud McCullough Bolt.- Hazeldean is looking down at whom appears to be the oldest woman in the photo who is likely to be Rachel Mairs DeWitt
(1832-1912). She was married to Dr. Joel DeWitt.- NOTE: If you click on the small photos of Margaret, Elfie, Hazeldean or Rachel, you will find a photo that looks like it was taken at the same house, It even looks like Hazeldean and Margaret are wearing the same dresses in both photos. Their hair color seems lighter so this big photo may be at a later date. The house may be the DeWitt brick house which can be seen at: DEWITT_HOUSE. or Where Is Reger?
- Is that Eula DeWitt Shatto (1886-1986) kneeling with the white blouse and dark tie seen with the little girl looking up at her?
- She was the daughter of Mark Pinkney and Bertha Swanger DeWitt.
- In a note from Karl Seitz in October 2006:
- Some years ago, when my cousin Joy Ware first saw Buff's picture,
she ventured the thought that the little girl in the front row with
the ribbon in her hair who is looking up and back is her mother, Ruth
Seitz (1908-1973). My estimate is that the girl is about three years
old. That's the same Ruth Seitz who is an infant in my
five-generation picture, which would fit with your suspicion that
Buff's picture was taken later than mine.
Your own identification of Hazeldean Bolt Seitz, which I'm
ashamed to admit I didn't make but with which I concur, reinforces
the Ruth identification. The child appears to be looking at either
Rachal Mairs DeWitt or Hazeldean Bolt Seitz and both women appear to
be looking in the child's direction. The woman in between, Eula
DeWitt Shatto, looks like she's trying to concentrate on the
photographer and ignore the girl's actions.- In a note from Josephine McCullough Ware in June 2008:
- My name is Joy McCullough Ware. I was born Josephine McCullough Ware (July, 1936) and am the older daughter of Ruth Seitz Ware. She is the infant in my cousin Karl Seitz's five-generation picture. She's also, a bit older (with the bow in her hair) sitting in the front row looking back toward her mother Hazel and her great-grandmother Rachel ~ in the larger group picture (See Above).
- Joy also pointed out that it is doubtful that Elfie is in the photo at all... so I have removed her identification that I stated above and had included in an earlier analysis of this photo.

PHOTO 2
Such a lovely family in Nebraska.
I have no idea who they are.... but...
Recently I realized that Fairbury, Nebraska where the photo was taken by John G Rawles,
is very close to Alexandria, Thayer Co, Nebraska. (See map below and click to see larger view.)
Alexandria is where my grandmother Mary S Harmon Richardson and her husband William P Richardson
lived for four years around 1909. In addition, her sister Louisa Harmon Sinn and her husband George Sinn
lived in Alexandria all their married lives. So I imagine that this family is related to the Harmon
side of my family. See photo 4 below to view a photo of "Agnes" taken by another nearby photographer
in Hebron, Nebraska (See map above.).
John G Rawles was listed as a photographer in the 1900 census in Fairbury, Jefferson Co, Nebraska
but not the 1910 census, so that provides a time frame for this photo.
UPDATE February 2010:
Thanks to this website, I have finally solved this mystery! In February 2010, Doug Bartholomew
contacted me from Chariton Co, MO with his family's copy of the same photo! On the back was written
"Uncle Henry and Aunt Augusta Nachtigall and children, Hebron, Nebr"
After further research, I am fairly sure that Augusta was Augusta Bartells, who was the younger
sister of Paulina Bartells Harman, who is my great grandmother. So These folks are my great uncle and aunt!
The children may be the first two boys: Lewis born in 1902 on the left (or maybe Lucy born in 1902?)
and probably John Henry born in 1897) If true, that would put the date of this photo at about 1905.
You can see more about them at: August Bartells

MAIRS:
Although I have information on the Mairs family because Dr. Joel DeWitt's wife Rachel was a Mairs,
I do NOT know who back row: 1) Margaret Mairs and 4) Mrs. John Mairs are.
Is Mrs. John Mairs the wife of John Braxton Mairs, son of Mark B. Mairs, son of Joseph Mairs?
