You are responsible for Lipids Structure & Function in chapters 2 and 11 in the Cell Biology book, Dr. DeWitt’s Lipids computer programs and class notes/discussions.   The PPAO will be given as listed on the DUE DATES website.  There will be no retakes.  Your grade on this exam is final.  This exam will count 21% of your final grade. 


Exam Format:

The format of the PPAO will be a combination of: 

  • TWO essays (One from each of two groups of two questions taken from the questions listed below. In other words, you may be given questions 1 and 3 in one group and 2 and 4 in the other and you must answer one essay from each group.) You should plan your answer to each essay so that you can write it within 20 minutes.  Each essay will count for 35 points.
  • TEN multiple choice questions (see the Mol. Bio. Lipids Multiple Choice Questions) that includes the material covered by these QFYC. You should leave 20 minutes to answer these questions during the exam.  These questions count for 30 points.
Questions For Your Consideration (QFYC):

1.    What is a fatty acid? How are they classified? How can you detect samples made from different types of fatty acids? What are the effects of double bonds on the physical state of fatty acids? How are they involved with condensation reactions? Provide examples (showing atomic configuration) for each point that you discuss.

2.    What are soaps and how are they made? How do soaps work? How are phospholipids related to soaps? What are micelles?  Compare a soap bubble to a cell membrane. Provide examples (showing molecular configuration) for each point that you discuss.

3.    What are glycerophospholipids? How are they constructed? What kinds exist? Are they found in any other structures besides the plasma membrane of cells? (Of course, examples are expected here too.)

4.    How are cholesterol, phospholipids, glycolipids and proteins used to construct cell membranes? (Don't forget those examples.)

Note:   Every major concept that you include in your answer should be accompanied by the appropriate diagrams of molecules.
