Assignments Descriptions

You are responsible for Amino Acid and Protein Structure & Function. Your primary resource is Dr. DeWitt’s class notes on Amino Acids and Proteins. The PPAO will be given on the date listed at the Due Dates Website.  There will be no retakes.  Your grade on this exam is final.  This exam will count 23% of your trimester 2 grade.

Exam Format:
The format of the PPAO will be a combination of:
  1. TWO essays: Two from the questions listed below. You should plan your answer to each essay so that you can write it within 20 minutes.  Each essay will count for 35 points.
  2. TEN multiple choice questions (See the Protein Practice Questions handout provided by Dr. DeWitt in class.) that include the material covered by these QFYC listed below. You should leave 20 minutes to answer these questions during the exam.  These questions count for 30 points of the 100 point exam.
  3. ONE 6-point Extra Credit essay
Questions For Your Consideration (QFYC):
1. How do enzymes work?
2.
How do you make an amino acid? What variation exists between amino acids (including a brief overview of R-group classes)? How many are there? Are they all essential? How does isomerism relate to amino acids? Provide examples (showing atomic configuration) for each point that you discuss.
3. How do you make a protein (chemically)? What is the primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary structures of proteins? Where does the function of a protein become active when you consider these structures? (Of course examples are expected here too!)

Note:   Every major concept that you include in your answer should be accompanied by the appropriate diagrams of molecules.
