Previous Workshops

Are your students prepared to communicate effectively at work? Would they benefit from the use of AAC? Transitioning from the structured school environment to the working world can present new and unique challenges to students with communication difficulties and to the professionals who work with them. This workshop will present strategies for providing students with functional communication on the job using high tech., light tech., and no tech. Options. We will discuss “CENTS” a model for considering AAC for work related needs, including socialization with coworkers, personal needs, job tasks, and travel. AAC systems that offer quick access, portability, and flexibility will be demonstrated.

CST members, administrators, therapists, parents, and teachers, this is your chance to bone up on your knowledge of augmentative communication and AAC devices! This introductory workshop will hit the ground running and won’t stop until we have taken a look at when an evaluation referral is warranted, what a good assessment consists of, why a certain device might be chosen, funding options, staff training, and strategies for student success. Participants will be given time for a hands-on exploration of devices as well as ample time for questions.
If you are a member of a school-based team with responsibilities for determining, designing, and implementing AAC intervention for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder...this workshop is for you! With all of the different AAC devices and systems out there the task of providing effective services to students can be a daunting one. We will explore a variety of communication devices within the context of current programs such as Discrete Trial Teaching, PECS, Functional Communication Training, and others. A primary focus will be on current practice in this area and the tools needed to maximize communication success.
