Timeline for doing the Extended Essay for your IB Diploma
These deadlines will help you complete this Diploma requirement in a timely and organized manner. Not following these deadlines will put your success in the program at risk.
Pre-IB Project: you take a project where you do a shortened version of the Extended Essay (2,000 word maximum). This project is run at the FDU Weiner Library, and you go through all the steps you should do in completing your official essay (assemble sources, develop a research question, outline your ideas and develop written drafts). If you choose, you can use the topic of this essay to develop into your official IB Extended Essay
February - you find a supervisor for your Extended Essay. This supervisor is a teacher who is knowledgeable in the subject area that your essay will be in and can help guide you towards primary sources for your research. You are to meet with your supervisor for 5 hours or so in the process of doing your essay so that you can get some feedback about your ideas and analyses.
March - develop your research question to clarify your specific topic and approach for your essay. Meet with your supervisor to discuss sources and start developing an outline.
June - your outline should be completed and forwarded to your supervisor for review. This outline will help you develop your rough draft, which is due when you return from summer break.
Summer Break - complete a full rough draft of your essay
Senior Year:
September - Return from summer break with a full rough draft. Have your supervisor read over your rough draft so that you can get feedback about your ideas and analyses.
October - submit the subject of your Extended Essay to Richard Weems so that he can submit it to the IBO. Extended Essay subjects can be changed up until January 15.
December - Submit a final draft of your Extended Essay to your supervisor. Your supervisor will then review your final draft to make sure that it is coincides with the IBO criteria for that subject.
January - Submit three copies of the final draft of your Extended Essay to your supervisor in the official IB cover page. Your supervisor will then sign the cover page and give the essay to Richard Weems, who will submit it to the IBO.
