Ancient Systems of Law Debate

Now that we have established a basic background in these ancient and early systems of law, it is time to decide which one is the best.  In other words, which system of law was best suited for the time it was used in terms of accessibility, breadth, and fairness?  This will be accomplished in the forum of a debate.  The groups from the previous project stage will be divided up and placed with a new group as stated below.  You will be given 1 class period to research the strengths and weaknesses of your new topic as well as the strengths and weaknesses of your opponents’ topics.  Use the Facts sheet completed during part one of this project as well as the source sheets I provided.

The format of the debate will be as follows:

Opening Statement: (2 min) Introduce your topic, stating why it is superior to all others and begin to tear apart your opponent. Extra time will be used for questions.

Regroup: (2 min) Prep for Rebuttal

Rebuttal: (3 min) Defend yourself and disprove the attacks made against you, restate your superiority and go for your opponents’ jugulars once more! Extra time used for question.

Regroup (2 min): Prep for closing

Closing Statement: (2 1/2 Min) Once last chance to plead your case and prove the other teams wrong.

No, this is not a standard debate format, but it will be the one that we will be using.  You can divide the speaking time up amongst members, but all team members must participate and speak.  During the debate, no talking outside of the speakers will be permitted (point penalties will be enforced).  Use this time to take notes.  Any extra time at the end of each segment, with the exception of closing statements will be used for questions.  Remember the show will go on regardless of absence, so be prepared and communicate with your team. This assignment will be rubric based.  Good Luck!!!!
