Writing reference letters is a time-consuming process that I enjoy, but also take seriously.  To write references worthy of each student, I cannot write letters for more than 12 students each year.  If you are interested in asking me to write your letters, make sure you meet the requirements listed below.

1.  You have a minimum of a B in Advanced Chemistry or a minimum of a B+ in ToK.
2.  If you are an IB diploma candidate, you must be current on your CAS hours.
3.  You do not have any academic honesty violations on file with the main office.

If you meet these requirements, then follow this procedure for requesting reference letters.

1.  During the third trimester of your junior year, talk to me in person, preferably not just before or just after a class.  (If you're reading this you probably have already done so.)
2.  Send me an email (todcra@bergen.org) with the title Reference Request from 'your name' before June 18th indicating you would like me to write your reference letters.
3.  I will inform you sometime before June 25th by email if I can or cannot write your letters.  If I receive several requests, preference may be given to students who took any electives or projects I taught in addition to Advanced Chemistry or ToK.  Meeting the above requirements does not guarantee that I will write your letters.  I reserve the right to refuse any request without explanation.

If I agree to write your letters, then follow this procedure.

1.  In the fall of your senior year, provide me with all the paperwork for your references as soon as possible, but no later than three weeks before the first application deadline.  The paperwork should be put in a large unsealed envelope.  On the outside of envelope write your name and list the colleges to which you are applying.  Next to each college, indicate if it uses the common application and the guidance due date for submission.  You only need to give me one copy of the common application regardless of the number of common app. schools you list.
2.  On each form, provide all of your contact information and signatures, list the class(es) you took with me and the grade(s) you earned.  Because of all the paperwork required to complete references for all my students, it is absolutely essential that you fill in this information.
4.  On each form, provide all of my contact information (see below).  I should only have to sign my name, date my signature, complete any checklists and attach my letter to the forms.  Again, it is essential that you fill in all the parts of the form I ask you to complete.
5.  You must provide a SELF-ADHESIVE envelope for each recommendation letter.  The envelope must have my return address and the college address written or typed on it.  Stamps are optional.
6.  Check with me in person or by email about 1 week before the due date of your first application.

I started teaching during the 2000-2001 school year.  Do the math to determine the number I years I have been teaching.

Final comments:

I will check with the main office sometime in late April/early May of your senior year to check for new academic honesty violations.  If you have any violations during your senior year, I will send a letter to the colleges and universities you applied to and rescind my reference letter.

Believe it or not, I enjoy writing reference letters.  You have worked hard and deserve the opportunity to go to the college or university of your choice.  I welcome the chance to help you achieve that goal.
